Would you take $1,600 to skip senior year?
Would you take $1,600 to skip senior year?
Idaho lawmakers have proposed paying high school students – in the form of scholarships – to skip senior year and enroll in college early. Eight other states are participating in a program that would allow high school sophomores to pass a series of tests and graduate early.
Idaho's plan goes further than other programs around the country because it would allow students to graduate from high school up to three years early, and then receive taxpayer money to enroll at a state university or community college. Students would receive approximately $1,600 in scholarship money for each year they graduate early.
From New Mexico to Pennsylvania, eight states nationwide are participating in a pilot program that would allow high school sophomores to graduate early, getting a head start on community college. The program, spearheaded by the National Center on Education and the Economy, would include 10 to 20 high schools in each state and start in 2011. Connecticut, Kentucky, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont are also participating.
Every high school has at least a handful of them, gifted students who blow through Faulkner as if it were a comic book, teenagers who catch on to calculus as if it were checkers.
These students are often just marking time in high school and typically become bored and withdrawn as they long for a bigger academic challenge.
States are responding to the problem by making it easier for gifted students to head off to college sooner.

no i wouldnt because then if i skip senior year. I wouldnt get my diploma and i wouldnt be able to get a job. I would be in the streets homeless
I think that this is crazy. Why would anyone in their right mind want to skip the best year of high school. To be honest we are really not in school for that long anyway. When you skip your senior year you skip prom and you also skip the chance to walk across the stage to receive your diploma. College is not going anywhere and therefore you should not be in a rush to get there.
This is kind of odd. I mean it all really depends on how smart you are and how good your grades are and also where you are going to college. If you were trying to get a doctor's degree then I think skipping senior year would be fine. There is a program called Running Start where you spend the last year of high school at your local community college so you don't have to go to high school, but you still get college credits. If people spent their money into THIS instead of just getting out of class, I think it would be much better. But also there's the fact that if you miss senior year that you won't be able to experience being the top dog and being the last time that you would be at high school and being able to graduate. Also, many girls really want to go to senior prom and boys may be on their last year of high school football. It just really all depends on how you want your future to go.
That is ridiculous. Kids should have to go through high school, so they get more education. And the school shouldn't pay the students, the students should pay the school. If kids are really smart, there are classes just for them that they could take, or if they are smart enough, they could skip a grade. It would lower the self-esteem of not so bright students, and feel left out, and left behind. Schools shouldn't allow it.
i think this is the most dumbest thing you can do because u need all four years of college to get a good job and get somewhere with your like how you gonna get your gd without all years of high school your not so i think this is really stupid.
To think about this proposal, its very odd. I've Heard of skipping senior year and also graduating early as a senior but now sophomores taking tests to graduate? I think that its ridiculous. Why do kids want to grow up so fast? And also, just because they may be bright students does not mean that they are emotionally mature yet to be dealing with college life. They'd be skipping a whole developmental stage in their life that they truly need by going straight to college. Senior year is supposed to be the funnest year to be participating in and you're supposed to be excited to graduate with your classmates and move on with your life! By having them graduate early, it's putting on so much pressure towards these students by rushing them when there really is no need to start rushing at all. By giving them money, it would motivate students to do good and graduate early, but the money is not worth it by all the time you have to spend making sure you study for those huge tests. Even though its possible, why would a 15-16 year old want to rush to college so fast for? It makes no sense to me personally but we'll see where this proposal ends up.
Dude, who ever would want to skip the best year of high school is a real weirdo, because seriously, that's the one year when kids can go to the senior prom, and spend the last year with their friends who they may never see again. People who want to go to college want to go to senior year. My mother couldn't go to her senior year of high school because she was very sick. She wishes she never had gotten sick in the first place. See, people may say that they absolutely, positively hate school and wish it never was invented, but guess what, when they go to get a job, one of the questions are gonna be, "What education do you have?", that's the one question that may get you the job. So the next time you get assigned homework on the night of your friend's party, don't say you hate school, be thankful that you have it.
IN MY OPINION I WOULDN'T SKIP SENIOR YEAR TO GET MONEY TO GET MONEY TO GO TO COLLEGE EARLY. SENIOR YEAR FOR ME WOULD BE LIKE THE LAST YEAR OF SCHOOL TO DO WHATEVER WE WANT AND JUST CHILL. ALSO WHY WOULD WE TAKE ALL THE EXAMS JUST TO GET PAID TO DROP OUT FROM YOUR SENIOR YEAR. SENIOR YEAR FOR ME WOULD JUST TO RELAX OR START TO APPLY FOR COLLEGES. ALSO IT CAN BE A BAD HABIT THAT YOU CAN EXHIBIT. ALSO THE MONEY THEY GIVE YOU WONT LAST FOREVER AND THEN YOUR GOING TO START REGRETTING THAT YOU DIDN'T FINISH SENIOR YEAR.ALSO WE WOULD BE MISSING ALL OF THE ACTIVITIES OF SENIOR YEAR.
I Mean I Will Do If I Think That I Am Smart Enough But I Dont Think That I Am That Smart To Do That Because Its Many Things The Teacher May Teach You As A Senior That You May Need In Your Life And In College So I Would Do It But Then I Wouldnt do It.
Why would states do that to get students out of high school. The bad part about that plan is that some students who get lucky on the test who aren't smart enough to skip will, and they won't be ready for it. Although I would like to get paid for how smart I was. Senior year is one of the best things for people in high school to go through. Its also important for their social class in the future. I don't understand why teachers would make students go off to college early. For the super gifted students, it would be a good thing but for the not so gifted students, they would struggle a lot. I just don't think it's a good idea to send students off to college early just for money.
