You go, girl! Woman's Oscar win makes history

You go, girl! Woman's Oscar win makes history Kathryn Bigelow made Oscar history Sunday night, becoming the first woman to win best director at the Academy Awards for her gritty Iraq war saga "The Hurt Locker."

Coincidentally, today marks the beginning of Women's History Week and March is Women's History Month.

Bigelow's film, which also won best picture, follows the dangerous daily existence of an Army bomb defusal team. It earned six Oscars.

"There is no other way to describe it — it's the moment of a lifetime," Bigelow said, her voice quivering. She dedicated the award to the military men and women serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world: "May they come home safe."

Bigelow was the fourth woman nominated for the prize, following Sofia Coppola for 2003's "Lost in Translation," Jane Campion for 1993's "The Piano" and Lina Wertmuller for 1975's "Seven Beauties." She was the front runner heading into the Academy Awards.

Barbra Streisand, director of films including "Yentl" and "The Prince of Tides," walked out on stage to present the category.

"Well, the time has come," Streisand said before announcing Bigelow's win.

Wow I have never heard of that girl ,surprisingly, but anyway I have seen that movie and it is really put together pretty fairly and I don't watch the Grammys so i won't know if she won or not but anyway good fro her!

I think that it's a great thing she won an award at the Oscars. This shows that women are just as good as men. Good job Kathryn Bigelow for making Oscars history!

I think that this is very great! I think woman sometimes need more credit than men because there are so many woman who have done so many great things in life that effect us today.

I think it is amazing Mrs.Bigelow won an Academy Award. The Hurt Locker must of have
made a lot of money. It's amazing to be the first woman directer to win. Hopefully they do come home safe and I'm sure many people agree with her.

This is awesome! America has indeed had some historic moments in the past decade... 9/11... Obama... And now this! I actually wish to be a director one day... I've writen and directed plays and performances in my church and community! I will ALWAYS look at this as a burst of inspiration! Brava Ms. Bigelow!

I was rooting for her to win. I watched the movie and loved it! It really made you understand the hardships of serving in a foreign country and the strain it can put on a family. It was so good it made me feel like I was really there!

This made my day. The Hurt locker was a great movie (or at least in my mother's opinion). I was just so happy that James Cameron did not win. (No offense to anyone.) Did anyone know that she was his ex-wife?

I think its awesome that she won that award. She must be so happy. She has really good self-assurance. I would have been too scared to even become a female director.

cool i may be a guy but that proves women can do almost anything that men can do so you go girl that is amazing awesome and spectacular

this is a great movie and shes a great actor i can really see how she won this award and i glad she did i'd like to see her in another movie
