Uzbekistan cancels Valentine's Day

Uzbekistan cancels Valentine's Day Authorities in Uzbekistan are, apparently, unwilling to give love a chance.

The Russian news agency RIA-Novosti cited several local media in the Central Asian nation reporting Tuesday that Uzbekistan has canceled concerts and other events for Valentine's Day. Instead, residents in the capital of Tashkent can enjoy readings of poems by Mughal emperor Babur, who died in the 16th century.

The unofficial ban on romance-related festivities echoes long-standing antagonism in Uzbekistan toward the holiday. Last year, the Turkiston newspaper described Valentine's Day as the work of "forces with evil goals bent on putting an end to national values."

Although most people across former Soviet Central Asia are Muslim, many enjoy celebrating what is nominally a Christian feast.

no one can ban valentines day, because, if someone loves another person. banning valentines day is like banning love. and no one can ban love, even all it is, is a hating country, which is wrong. but you still cant ban love or VALENTINES DAY!!!!!!!! >.<

thats just mess up everyone deserves freedom n no matter what god die for us because he want us to have freedom thats the reason

That's just sad i mean what is the big deal it doesn't hurt anything. How can someone not like getting gifts and spending time with a significant other.

I feel that this is not something the government can dictate and it is unfair. If I lived there I would still celebrate it because they can't control what I do.

The uniffical ban of valentine's day is very sad. What about the couples and loved one on Valentine's Day? Also how could someone ban Valentine's Day?!In my opion that is messed up.

Why would They do that??? I think thats not a good idea because its bein a hoilday for a long time and to suddenly take it out not a good thing to do.They should have a protest or something I would

What? Why? What kind of person would ban a day full of love and happiness? thats just mean >.< "forces with evil goals" its chocolate and love! Next their going to ban easter because its to colorful. okay maybe i'm overreacting a little . . . but really?!?!?

in a way this could be a good thing. && bad thing
Valintimes day is supossivly the day of Love but honestly i think it should be the day of Breakups. Ot was valintimes on tuesday where im at and just a weeek before that on monday i found out that my boyfriend had cheated on me. Last year around valintimes day me and my boyfriend broke up to. but then again the good is if you dont even have a bf it gives guys the courage to ask you out or somthing maybe?
I dont know.

It's kind of funny to me that they canceled Valentine's day, such an innocent holiday but I really don't care. If the majority of people there are Muslim and they don't celebrate Valentine's day then it shouldn't really matter if they cancel it if bareley anybody celebrates it anyway.

Uzbekistan how much valentine's day is to some people. This is how much it is to some people, some people get ingaged , they get gifs , people go out or stay at home and have dinner.
