Would you swim outside in January?
Would you swim outside in January?
Thousands of people clad in bathing trunks, bikinis and even some woolly winter hats have taken the Polar Bear Plunge into the Chesapeake Bay for charity.
The surging mass of bathers whooped and hollered as they dashed into the chill winter waters, monitored by safety divers in wetsuits just offshore at Sandy Point State Park in Maryland.
Some participants spent mere seconds in the water, leaving behind sandals and floppy beach hats in the rush to get out just as fast as they got in.
Some wore costumes, one like "Star Wars" character Darth Vader.
Saturday's was the 16th annual Polar Bear Plunge at the park, benefiting Special Olympics Maryland. Last year's plunge raised nearly $3 million, but there was no immediate word on the amount raised this year.

There is no way I would do anything like this. But it sure would be fun to watch. I wonder how they collect money for charity by doing such a crazy thing. I think i would be to cold to go down in the water in January. My last thing i would like to add is that you can get really sick from swimming in the cold weather.

If i lived in the south, then yeah, I would. But River Rouge is always cold in January, so you'd catch a cold if you swam in the winter.
To jump into freezing cold water for charity is very generous, but I don't think I would be able to cope with the freezing temperatures. The people who participated in this event have a lot of courage and strength. I am a good swimmer, but to be in icy cold water is not my thing.
I would go swimming in January. But only if I was in Florida. I would go swimming any time in Florida. It's always warm and sunny unless it's raining. (Mrs.Gleeson, I'm doing this response for m missing assignment from 03/01/2012.)
Whoever would swim in the ocean during January in swimsuits is nuts. I wouldn't do that even if someone paid me. That water has to be freezing cold. I can't under stand how any body could do that.
I give credit to anyone who can get themselves to jump into the Chesapeake Bay in the middle of January. I'm such a wuss when it comes to cold water! If i wasn't, I would definitely try to be a part of the plunge. If this event raised 3 million bucks, it sounds like a fun and successful way to raise money for a great cause. Two of my friends went to the Polar Bear Plunge this year, and they were telling me how much fun they had. Hopefully I can convince myself to participate next year if I'm still living in the area, because it sounds like it would definitely be worth the trip.
This article is about people in swim suits going in to a pool in January. They are wondering if they should or shouldn't go in the pool in January. I think no cause it is too cold. I would freeze to death. I hate swimming in cold weather.
Wow!!
That is crazy. I would never do that. If I did that I would probably use the bathroom on myself. I don't want that to happen because that would be pretty repulsive. But I can't believe that they made $3 million dollars from people doing something like that.
Ahhhhh. That's cold!
Are they crazy?!?! Who would go swimming in the middle of January?! Not me that's for sure. You could get sick. It is not healthy to go swimming in really cold water.
