Wanna party at Thomas Jefferson's? Don't try it!
You can't dance at the Jefferson Memorial.
A federal judge has ruled against a woman who was arrested for dancing with a group of 17 others at the memorial dedicated to President Thomas Jefferson. The woman, Mary Oberwetter, and others were dancing to music on their headphones near midnight April 12, 2008, the eve of Jefferson's birthday.
A National Park Service officer told the group to stop dancing and arrested Oberwetter when she refused. Charges against her were later dropped.
But Oberwetter sued the Park Service last year, claiming a violation of her rights to free expression. U.S. District Judge John D. Bates says the inside of the memorial is not a public forum where people can dance, even if it's a silent dance party.

That does not make any since to arrest someone for dancing, I meen its not respectful but come on really. They aren't hurting anybody, and if they really care about that they should put up signs saying no dancing or something like that, so people know they aren't supposed to do that.
I think that this topic is very interesting. I have never heard of anyone dancing in any memorial, ever, not even in broad daylight. Sure it has freedom of expression but, the law has its rights. I have never understood why people party at midnight. Ok, maybe it's a group of drunk teens, but still there is no exception. Over all, I hope that no one is going to party on at any government sight any time soon.
It is always rude to dance at someones grave or memorial. I don't understand the point of doing that. She was celebrating, she was disrupting the memorial. That is rude and unnecessary. It was completely uncalled for.
It is probably always rude to dance on someones grave/memorial. I think that these people were just trying to have fun, which is cool, BUT sometimes fun is not appropriate. People have to be taught respect and this group of people were obviously not ever taught this concept. We have to remember that there is a time and place for everything.
I feel very bad for this woman. She was just trying to have fun. It sounds to me like she was sort of celebrating Jefferson's birthday. What's the use of a party without dancing? Although I can see where the judge's point of view is, I do not agree with what happened to this woman. Everyone's rights are protected by the Constitution and freedom of expression is covered by the first ten amendments. I don't blame the woman for suing the park after her being unjustly arrested. I'm very thankful, as I'm sure her loved ones are as well, that her charges were dropped. It would be terrible to see someone going to jail for something so harmless as dancing, with no unnecessary noise I might add, when there are real crimes being committed such as murder or rape or something very serious and dangerous. Last time I checked, dancing never hurt anyone.
That is so stupid, she was not being insulting also it was from a CD player. She should have a right to do it anyway.
that sounds like fun. i would love to do that. to bad he is not alive. i think Thomas Jefferson was a really cool guy. and to top that off he made the light bulb! yayyyyyy!
Who would do something so stupid! I mean, you might have to be smart to know not to dance at Thomas Jefferson's!!! I would never do that even if I was dared to do it. I don't want to pay the price for that. Apparently they do though.
The main idea of this article is that it's disrespectful to dance at someones memorial. I found it interesting that someone would even want to dance at Thomas Jefferson's memorial. I learned that dancing at a memorial is very rude. I think that the lady shouldn't have refused to stop dancing because it's a lot like dancing on someones grave. You just don't do it.
