When it comes to exercise, Melissa Crenshaw's friends hold her accountable, whether it is sending a text to make sure she meets them at aerobics class, or for a walk with their children in the afternoon.
"I'll get the text reminder, or send a girlfriend a quick text and we'll meet," said the busy Montgomery mother of three. "Accountability plays into this. Our goal is to just exercise."
Many people are relying more on social media to help them set, track and achieve and maintain fitness goals. While for some, like Crenshaw, it's something as simple as a text message reminding her of her exercise meet-up time, others are turning increasingly more to fitness-focused Internet websites, Facebook, Twitter and smartphone apps to help stay on track.
The common goal, in all cases, is accountability.
A recent study conducted by the Center for Obesity Research and Education at Temple University showed that college students who used cellphones to monitor calories and physical activity, and who received personalized feedback about how they were doing dropped significantly more weight than those who didn't.

I think it's a good idea for her to use technology to help her reach her goals. It makes sense for them to communicate through text so they don't forget.
ya of chorse if you texts you weigh less because you dont eat just because u weigh less is not always a good thing because you can be unhealthy
I agree that a lot of people are using there cellphones to help them get to exercising or communicate to see who has lost how much or ill see you at the gym. My sister likes to go to the gym and sometimes see goes to this class with her friend and work's out. Exercising is good but I noticed that when your with a friend or family member it motivates you to push harder to be the fastest or tie in a race. Also there are apps that you can download to your phone to track your calories and your limit for the day is up. So when you go work test or call someone to meet you there or outside and play a round of soccer.
Comment- I think that it's cool how they remind themselves to exercise, and stay in shape. That's some true friends. It's really good to exercise and be skinny. But when your super super skinny, eat.

I think that is a good system. if it was facebook, you would log off and then forget. me personally, i can see what they send on my phone without looking at the message. so I would read it but not open it until im done with my workout.
Texting doesn't really make you lose weight... This article is just basically saying that texting each other "Hey, lets go work out." helps you to lose weight. Which is kind of a pointless topic for an article if you ask me. If texting made you lose weight, I'd weigh nothing by now.
I don't understand how some people can text really fast and others very slow. If you could actually text and loose weight i would texxt 24/7. If only life was that simple.
This article affects me by reminding me to be an accountability partner for my friends. I think the author wrote this article because it is a surprising and interesting topic. In my opinion, this article should be called "More Accountability, More Weight Loss".
I text my friends all the time and say things like "do you want to hang out" or "Don't forget that the project is due tomorrow." Simple reminders are always helpful. No matter what it is. I also get calendar alerts. I think 50% of the time I rely on my calendar alerts. It's always helpful to have a little reminder once in awhile.
