Texas schools get in tune with iTunes

Texas schools get in tune with iTunes Texas students can now download podcasts, videos and other multimedia lessons directly from iTunes through a new online program aimed at providing free, supplementary coursework that can be accessed anywhere,.

The Texas Education iTunes U channel allows teachers to upload material from their classes to help students understand new concepts or do more research in a specific subject area. Students and parents can access the material through home or school computers, and those with iPods can download the information to the handheld devices.

Teachers across the state can also trade tips and advice about lesson plans by posting and viewing each other's videos. Already, 146,000 teachers have signed up to participate and formed 5,000 subject groups, said Education Commissioner Robert Scott.

Other state agencies and nonprofit groups will also participate and upload content to the site. The state has partnered with PBS, the Smithsonian Institution and the National Archives, Scott said.

Any user can download the public, free materials the same way music and videos are accessed from the popular online store. Forum-based discussions between teachers will be password-protected.

A Perry spokeswoman said all posted material will be vetted through the Texas Education Agency and work in conjunction with state-approved textbooks.

I think that this is really Awesome. So now ends ted of going to school and asking your teacher you can just look on itunes. It also helps if you need help with your homework. I wish my school had this.

I like the idea of learning through itunes. I always need extra help with math so downloading a podcast of a lesson should help. It would also help out the teachers. Besides getting new lesson ideas, kids could also finish a lesson if the teacher didn't get a chance to finish in class. I guess you would need to have an ipod to use this or you could just find the software and watch it on a computer. I like the way schools are bringing technology into education. I think more kids will be excited about learning through something new and interactive. This would probably encourage kids to bring ipods to school though. Studying could probably be used as an excuse to listen to music. Overall, I think people will get some good use out of this program.

I want that at my school!! That would be amazing. I'm now wanting to move there! I think it's a fun and cool way to learn!!!!!!

This seems like a really good idea, And it won't feel like it's a waste of my time. They should do this at every school, it's fun and interactive!

I agree! It is a really good idea. I hope they do this at every school too! It is so neat on what they do I don't understand why they don't just try it for every school!

That a good idea because i used to be a student in Texas and it is a very fun program. I wish every school can have the same program. the program is a very cool program.

I wish are school got to download tunes that would make school better and make everybody want to go to school more often that's why the school board should let us bring are I pods.So who ever wants to get the school board to get all the schools and your school to get I tunes you better start typing.

It's great that they are integrating technology into education. I wish I could go home and study anything I was confused on that day via video or audio podcast. This is definitely a step in the right direction.
