Cross country runner collides with deer

Cross country runner collides with deer Sarah Glidden is one of the few people who can say she collided with a deer — while on foot. The Hortonville High School sophomore was running at a cross country sectional at Wausau, Wisconsin's 9-Mile County Forest course on Oct. 22 when an antlerless deer bolted from the woods.

With about 100 meters to go, Glidden partially spun around but she managed to maintain her balance. She kept running and so did the deer.

The 15-year-old said she felt fur on her leg but she only has a bruise.

She failed to qualify for the state meet, placing 18th overall. She told The Post-Crescent in Appleton she's not sure how much it affected her. But her time of 15:55 was 17 seconds slower than a few weeks ago.

"Hunters want me to go with them because they say I'm a magnet for deer," said Glidden with a laugh.

Glidden has been kidded by friends, family and fellow students about the incident and has been a good sport. It has been suggested that she wear blaze orange for future cross country races. Or wear deer whistles on her sneakers.

But she has handled it all with grace and a sense of humor.

"I think the whole thing is kind of funny," she said. "It's weird, but it's funny. A lot of people didn't believe me when I told them what happened. I can still feel that bruise."

That is so weird. I'd be so scared. I know a deer isn't that terrifying compared to other animals but it's still dangerous and it could totally beat me up. I'm surprised all she got was a bruise. It probably could have been worse.

I would be really scared if i was that girl. Running into deer on the street in your car are really scary. But when you are out running with no protection that's really crazy. If i was that girl i would have stopped. Wouldn't she have seen the deer though? I'm not sure but at least she wasn't put in the hospital.

You would think a runner would be paying attention to where they were running. And if you see a deer running you would stop but I guess not. But if that causes me from not qualifing i would cry.

I think that would be funny to watch. To be standing there watching cross country people run then see a girl collide with a deer out of nowhere. I think that would be awesome to see.

That is so awesome!! I would have killed the deer and make some good home made brekfast sausage with eggs, bacen , and some pancakes. Yumm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is crazy! How in the world? I wish that would happen to me, I would have tackled the deer...LOL!!!!!!
WEIRD!!!!!! That would rock to happen to me if i was hunting, because then i could have some good old deer jerky....YUMMY!!!!!

how do you get hit by a deer by running a race. they should put a fence up so in the future no deers would run onto the track and mess up the runners. how could you not see the deer running at you. i would have just stoped running till the deer went away. that stinks that it would mess up your time

Are you serious? That is hilarious, ha, ha, giggle, giggle. That is a once in a lifetime thing that just happened to her. My brother used to have a deer that used to follow him around.
