A tablet computer – for only $35!
It looks like an iPad, only it's 1/14th the cost: India has unveiled the prototype of a $35 basic touchscreen tablet aimed at students, which it hopes to bring into production by 2011.
If the government can find a manufacturer, the Linux operating system-based computer would be the latest in a string of "world's cheapest" innovations to hit the market out of India, which is home to the $2,127 compact Nano car, the $16 water purifier and the $2,000 open-heart surgery.
The tablet can be used for functions like word processing, web browsing and video-conferencing. It has a solar power option too — important for India's energy-starved hinterlands — though that add-on costs extra.
Mamta Varma, a ministry spokeswoman, said falling hardware costs and intelligent design make the price tag plausible. The tablet doesn't have a hard disk, but instead uses a memory card, much like a mobile phone. The tablet design cuts hardware costs, and the use of open-source software also adds to savings, she said.
Varma said several global manufacturers, including at least one from Taiwan, have shown interest in making the low-cost device, but no manufacturing or distribution deals have been finalized. She declined to name any of the companies.
India plans to subsidize the cost of the tablet for its students, bringing the purchase price down to around $20.
So far nearly 8,500 colleges have been connected and nearly 500 web and video-based courses have been uploaded on YouTube and other portals, the Ministry said.

A tablet for only $35! Wow!! That is awesome. It really looks like an iPad, but it is a tablet. I always like to buy an iPad which is cheap. This is the one I really like and want to buy.
That is pretty cheap price for a tablet computer for just $35. Usually a tablet cost like $200 depending on what kind it is. I think that is cheap for someone to sell a tablet for $35. It is cool to have a solar power option for a tablet that is similar to an iPad.
i Think The Price is to cheap for a computer tablet like the one were seeing here . Atleast those cost around $800 dollars . the think i like is that it comes with a camera insalled already
That's so cool! I wish I had one for camping so I could stay in touch with my friends.
Plus touch screen! Wow that's so cool!
When I tell my brother he will love it.
This is one of the smartest ideas I have seen in a long time. This well affordable tablet computer would be the change of the market I believe because so many kids either younger or older would buy this because its only 35 dollars. The major supporters and consumers would be college kids and business corporations because it would allow for presentations on the go, video conferencing and internet on the go with out the huge hole in the pocket. I would personally be interested in this product if it where to be built and sold, I love new technology and always have and have always had and wanted the "new thing". This I believe would spark a revolution in the way tablets are made and sold. These would make for great gifts for birthdays, Christmas and plenty of other things it is just a great idea all around.
Science: I wonder why they would give out a table computer for only $35? I would definitely buy that table computer for just that price. I would like that for i can do my homework or classwork. Or u can go in the Internet and I can go check my grades.
Science:I think that India selling the tablet computer for 35.00 is a really good idea. And because of how India which is home to the $2,127 compact Nano car, the $16 water purifier and the $2,000 open-heart surgery.India plans to subsidize the cost of the tablet for its students, bringing the purchase price down to around $20.So far nearly 8,500 colleges have been connected and nearly 500 web and video-based courses have been uploaded on YouTube and other portals.
I don't think that this would only be 35 dollars i think it at least more than 100 dollars. People would not sell a computer for 35 dollars. I think its cool but i don't think its 35 dollars.
I think that is a great idea because they are cheap and easily replaceable.I would like to buy two of them because they are cheaper than apples.I think they will skyrocket and beat apple industries.
This would be a great idea. For students you would not have to go to computer labs to go to study island or go onto this website. This would be a good idea.
