Surfing is an official school sport. Where?

Surfing is an official school sport. Where? Hawaii will soon become the first state in the nation to call surfing an official high school sport.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie and state education officials said Monday that riding the waves will join the likes of football, basketball, volleyball and swimming as a state-sanctioned prep sport in public schools, starting as early as spring 2013.

The Aloha State is known for its world-class surf breaks and competitions. It is home to many pro surfers and has produced several world champions including Hawaii's Carissa Moore, who this summer became the youngest world champion at 18.

"I think it's awesome, and it will open doors for kids," said Moore, who welcomed the announcement. She said the sport taught her many life lessons growing up, such as hard work, perseverance, and time management.

"Surfing and riding a wave is so much like life. You fall down over and over again, but you keep picking yourself back up until you ride one all the way to the beach," Moore said. "I know that's kind of cheesy, but I think surfing is definitely a really good outlet for a lot of teens and young kids. It's a way to channel a lot of energy into something positive. It's just really awesome."

The state Department of Education is working with the new appointed Board of Education on developing a plan to implement surfing. Judging will be done similar to pro surf meets and there will be an individual boys and girls champions, as well as team champions, similar to golfing, said BOE member Keith Amemiya, former head of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association.

With the addition of surfing, students in Hawaii public schools will have 19 different sports, believed to be the most of the nation — from air riflery to bowling — producing 44 state champions every year.

That shouldn't be a sport, because if they fall and there is a shark they will lose a body part or their lives. So, I think that is a bad sport because it's the school's fault not the parents fault.

This story reminds me of every time I go to the beach and I want to surf. In my personal opinion I think that it's so cool that in Hawaii they already have surfing as a sport in high schools. Also, a lot of kids are interested in doing this kind of sport. "Surfing and riding the waves is so much like life" is a great part of this article because, as I was reading this article and I saw this text, it really got me interested. I agree that when you feel the waves it is like remembering all the good things that have happend in your life. "With the addition of surfing, students in Hawaiian public schools will have 19 different sports, believed to be the most of the nation — from air riflery to bowling — producing 44 state champions every year". At this point in the article you can start thinking that this sport will be legal for the schools and that it's awsome. By analyzing this text, I learned that surfing is one of the most and coolest sports in the world, except for the fact that there could be sharks.

I think this is very cool. I personally like surfing. Schools that make this are going to become very famous. I wish I was in one of thous schools. That will be a very nice idea if they actually did it.

Sports: this is cool that surfing is going to be an official sport. Gov , Neil abercrombie and state education official Monday they will join the likes of football, basketball, volleyball , and swimming as a state -sanctioned prep.Hawaii will be the firs of are nation to have surfing to be a real sport that is cool . Surfing a sport at school thats pretty cool. Then the people who live in Hawaii are like surrounded by water which gives them more of an opportunities of going outside and just go surfing. Now I'm wishing that i lived in Hawaii I would go surfing everyday!

I think it is a really cool idea to have surfing as an official school sport. Hawaii is a perfect place for surfing to become school sport. I also think that surfing becoming a school sport can become a great opportunity for those people who love surfing. I think that a lot of people love surfing and have been waiting for surfing to become an official school sport for a really long time.

Hawaii will be the first state for surfing to become an official high school sport. The Aloha state is known for its world class surfing competitions. Hawaii public schools will now have 19 different sports. It is believe to be the most in the nation. They produce 44 state champions each year.

I think that would be so fun to have at are school I think that we should bribe our school so we can have it as a school sport.

Now I want to go to Hawaii and join surfing. I have always wanted to join a sport that has something to do with water. If I was able to go surfing I would scream my head off.

I think surfing would be a fun sport in Hawaii. I think that surfing as a sport would be really fun but l do not have it, and other children in other states do not have the sport.
