Suffolk schools may add arts and science magnet programs
Suffolk schools may add arts and science magnet programs:If enough money is found, two high school magnet programs - one for the arts and another for science, technology, engineering and math - could be offered in a year or two.
Administrators, teachers and community representatives make up two committees exploring the costs and curriculum options. "We're trying to give students choices," said Lynn Cross, assistant superintendent for special projects. The Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach school districts offer at least one academy or specialty school - separate from vocational and technical programs - that caters to specific interests or talents. Committee members have discussed designing the science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, program around three career pathways: engineering, bio-technology, and computer science and technology. The program would potentially serve about 300 students, Cross told the School Board recently. Options for the proposed arts program include dance, instrumental and vocal music, theater and visual arts. School officials expect to eventually have about 400 students enrolled, Cross said.
