Students revolt over vegetarian rumor
The rumor that Smith College was going entirely vegetarian, and that it would only buy food from local growers, started a ruckus on the school's Massachusetts campus.
There were protests and counter-protests last week at the prestigious women's college in Northampton, slogans pro and con written on walkways, and personal criticism of the manager of dining services.
It turns out it was a hoax, cooked up by two professors as part of their introductory class in logic.
Professor Jay Garfield tells The Boston Globe (http://bo.st/tqfDGO) the prank was a way to liven up a dry topic. He and professor Jim Henle have started false rumors in the past.
Smith President Carol Christ added to the exercise, saying Monday Garfield and Henle had been fired. That, too, was a hoax.

I love the idea of a vegetarian college! It shows how the school wants there students to have a healthier life style. I don't see the point of people protesting to be healthy!
The author's purpose for writing this article was to entertain and to show that even professors can play around and have fun, not just the college students. Although, the rumor was untrue, if I went to a college that would only sere vegan food, I would not be a very happy person, because personally I need my meat in my life!
I think it is stupid to have a vegan college. Some people do not like vegetables, and may only like to eat meats and things like that. Also, there is no need for protests about food when the school will probably fix the problem anyways.
I think those professors are idiots. If i had to go in school with only vegetables. I would not be going to school. I do not understand how they can think it is funny to start false rumors that could possibly start a riot.
I think that it is very funny how fast rumors can spread, especially across a whole college campus. Rumors and news have become something that people thrive on. It’s amazing how quickly people will react to a piece of news they have heard, without checking on the sources or credibility of the news. If I were a professor on this campus, I would get a kick out of seeing what one piece of information could do to a whole student body too.
Why are these professors still teaching at the State of Massachusetts? Starting something like this can be very harmful to them personally, but at the same time the staff and students. The protesting sounds like it got way out of control, and people were fixing to leave the school. I can't figure out why someone would do such a thing, and cause so much commotion. Try and imagine what the head master is going through. People are depending on him to make the right decision on what to do next. At least for now the student body is calm!
I personally think that those professors were out of their minds. I mean seriously I am a meat eater and I have no idea what i would do if I stayed in a school for four years with no meat! Even though it was just a prank.............................
Well that's kind of mean don't you think? I mean some of the students might me vegetarian. That could really hurt someone. In my opinion i would be mad if i saw that, my friends a vegetarian. I wonder if the two professors got in trouble?
theas profesers have a strange way of geting to their classes . to survive you nead meat vegitareans are quit unhelthy so wy would a colig want to be unhelthy .
I think it is good they got fired because the shouldnt do that or they should have told the big big teachers so they would have know but they didnt so they got fried so if they applie fo a new job they might think about it.
