Students aim to raise $2,000 for Heart Walk:

Students and staff at Winstead Elementary School are trying to raise $2,000 to meet their goal for the American Heart Association's Heart Walk. Saad Nait-Bella and Angelica Cruz were crowned the King and Queen of Hearts at Winstead Elementary. Saad raised $65.73 while Angelica raised $90.63 to help the school try to meet its fundraising goal.

Several activities have been completed since the fundraising started March 2. Activities included a heart competition between classes. Red, silver or gold hearts are purchased for different dollar amounts. The class with the most money collected from heart sales will receive either a pizza or ice cream party.

The school's Student Government Association has helped by making posters to advertise the various events and by running a heart sales booth. At the booth, red Heart Association bracelets and red dress pins that come with a "no homework" pass and gourmet lollipops have been sold. The heart sale booth raised $215.50.

The King and Queen of Hearts competition proved exciting for students. Each class chose one boy and one girl to run. These students had a container with their picture on it located in the library. Students, parents and faculty voted by placing money in individual containers. The students raising the most money were named king and queen. The competition raised $618.42. The crowning was held March 19.

Winners are Saad Nait-Bella and Angelica Cruz; second runner-ups, Sincere Batts and Kassandra Batts; third runner-ups, Nassem Williams and Jessica Medina Sanchez; fourth runner-ups, Octavious Carpenter and Toshanda Manning.

This is amazing. I know some people in my family that has died of heart attacks. It is very sad. I think it is awesome that these kids are trying so hard to help people they don't even know. It is very sweet of them. It shows how much they really care.

That is a heart taker, little kids trying to save to reach their goal to something they want. This I really cool because kids not like to do that stuff to help out. The American Association is one thing that helps anybody that needs help. That was a nice thing that they did trying to reach their goal.
