Snow woes: South socked, New England no show
Schools were shuttered across the South on Friday as snow began falling, bringing a rare white landscape that could stretch into areas that haven't seen snow in a decade — or longer.
But snowless New England states that rely on the white stuff for their winter activities are green with envy watching the Mid-Atlantic get blanketed with back-to-back blizzards. So little snow fell in Maine's largest city that Portland canceled its winter festival. In Vermont, no snow meant no sculpting contest. And in New Hampshire, the lack of snow nixed a dog sled race.
Three to 5 inches of snow were reported across northwest Louisiana, according to the National Weather Service. In southern Mississippi, 3 inches had fallen in McComb and 2 inches were on the ground in Tylertown.
Predictions of an inch of snow was enough to close schools in the Florida Panhandle, while classes also were canceled in parts of Alabama, where up to 5 inches of snow could fall.
Boston readied itself this week for a forecasted foot of snow. Schools closed and businesses let workers go home early. But the storm never materialized. Grand total: 1 inch, and it melted by the following morning. Meanwhile, more than 18 inches fell on the Mid-Atlantic.
Baltimore has gotten record snowfall, 77.9 inches, more than Buffalo, N.Y., and Caribou, Maine, two places known for their snowy winters. Snowfall records have also been shattered in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Wilmington, Del., and Atlantic City, N.J.

That would be strange if they got a lot of snow when they normally never get any snow. It probally affected all the people living there because they normally don't get snow. They probally did get suprised that day.
wow that would be so awsome to have that much snow right now here because i dont want any school right here in walhalla i wish that i would get that much if we would have that much snow here then we wouldn't have school for probably a whole entire month.
I like snow. I went with my dad in the truck to see the snow. It was fun.
I also went with my family to England. I saw light snow and rain outside.
WOW it looks like that New England has a snowing I feel bad for them. Also i was born when a blizzard was coming right on the 15th of December and that is alot of snow in New England.
I think they still could have gone to school 3 to 5 inches isn't even that much snow. Some years where I live they have 6 inches on the ground and they only cancel school for a day.
I wish it would have snowed more where I live, we had a mild winter for the most part, and the snow melted way too early.
That is really weird! In the northern places where there is usually tons of snow, there is barely any, and in the south where there is not very much snow, there is tons of snow! How is this possible? Maybe it's some freak weather change due to global warming. There was lots of snow here where I live though and Iowa is more north than it is south. I wonder what will happen next year.
Why are they closing school over a "predicted" inch of snow? Where I live we will be having school while we get a foot of snow. The reason school would close would be A: The Plows aren't running and the streets are covered in snow, B: The wind chill is pretty far below zero, or C: the snow melted then froze and the streets are covered in ice.
I wish that it sonws a lot here too! It sounds really cool. So we don't need to go to school and just playing on the snow.
That would be so cool to have that much snow.I wonder if they shut down school? If the school was out I would be outside all day and have snow ball fights with friends.
