Should California kids need helmets to ski?
Gov. Jerry Brown says California parents know best whether their children should wear helmets when they ski or ride snowboards. He has vetoed a bill that would have required helmets on the slopes for anyone under 18 years old.
Brown says in a veto message Wednesday that helmets provide protection, but parents can and should make good choices for their children without the state getting involved.
The Democratic governor says "not every human problem deserves a law."
SB105 by Sen. Leland Yee, a San Francisco Democrat, would have allowed $25 fines for parents whose children didn't wear helmets. He cited statistics showing half of reported ski-slope deaths stem from head injuries.
A similar bill passed last year, but did not become law because Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a related bill.

Should kids in California, or anywhere have to wear a helmet? Yes, they should. If you don't wear a helmet and you’re going down a steep hill and you fall and hit your head you could get severely injured. I don't like to wear them either but wouldn't you rather be safe and know you are decreasing the chance of getting hurt. You could easily end up in the hospital by skiing without a helmet. It may not completely stop all injuries but will give you a better and safer chance. I disagree with what IsaacN10 said because helmets can save your life and if you ever do hurt yourself by not wearing a helmet you will understand the importance of wearing one after if you don’t now.
Everyone should always wear a helmet when skiing whether they live in California or Montana or are under eighteen or above eighteen. It isn't hard to wear one, it's effortless. The three minutes it would take to put it on is nothing compared to the lifetime you would have to spend recovering from a bad head injury just because you wear to lazy to wear a helmet. I think the governor should have put more consideration into this bill rather than just vetoing it. It makes me wonder how many head injuries from kids and grown-ups it will take before the governor starts to rethink his decision.
I think this is an obvious yes that you should wear a helmet. I am puzzled in why people wouldn't wear a helmet, where is the logic in that?
I believe that you should do what you want to do. If you want to to wear a helmet, wear a helmet. But I advise you to wear one so you don't suffer.
yes they should because they might suffer head trauma if they dont or they die if they dont have them . alot of people could be worried or upset.
I think its ridiculous nobody by the law should actually have to wear a helmet. In my opinion I think helmets are dumb. Think like this your kid is trying a big turn with a helmet on. It just might happen that the helmet will tip he or she over and get hurt that way. That's my opinion though.
News: I honestly think every one no matter where they live should have to wear a helmet. Any thing that you could possibly hurt your head doing should involve a helmet. In a sport like that you could fall and hit your head and cause bad injuries. Even if you are over eighteen you should still wear a helmet for safety you never know when you are going to fall and when you do it could be really bad.
I think everyone should wear a helmet. 25$ for not wearing a helmet is a little harsh. Its kids parents decision to make the kid wear a helmet or not. If a kid doesn't wear a helmet and gets in a accident breaks his skull then its the kids faults choosing not to wear a helmet when skiing and or snowboarding.
i think it would be quite dangerous for a child under 18 not to wear a skiing helmet. Although I also think no one can force someone to do something they don't want to do, or pay for. It all relies on the type of personality a child has. If a kid were to get hurt because he was not wearing his helmet, the blame would go on himself. Personally I would rather be cautious and wear a helmet to protect myself from a severe injury to my head. I think that its better to be safe than sorry.
I have never ski or snowboarded personally , but I do know it only takes a small head injury to put you for a long time and that if your lucky. If these activities are as dangerous as they look i feel like kids should need to wear helmets. We have to wear them while riding a bike so why not skiing or snowboarding.
