San Francisco bans Happy Meals
San Francisco lawmakers have given preliminary approval to a law that would prohibit fast-food restaurants from putting toys in children's meals unless they include fruits and vegetables and don't have too many unhealthy calories.
A committee of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted 3-0 Monday to pass the proposed ordinance on to the full board. Santa Clara County supervisors adopted a similar law in April that banned all fast-food freebies.
Several doctors testified in favor of the San Francisco law. One recalled seeing children in hospital waiting rooms carrying McDonald's Happy Meals.
Under Supervisor Eric Mar's proposal, McDonald's and other restaurants could only include toys in meals that have a half-cup each of fruit and vegetables and limited amounts of sugar, sodium and fat.

It was smart for San Francisco to ban happy meals. When parents are busy with work and do not have the time to cook or make meals a quick easy option has always been fast food restaurants such as McDonalds. It may be quick but I think it’s only a matter of time but all states ban the meal. In the article it says, “A committee of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted 3-0 Monday to pass the proposed ordinance on to the full board ban.” It also says, “Several doctors testified in favor of the San Francisco law. One recalled seeing children in hospital waiting rooms carrying McDonald's Happy Meals.” Finally the text says, “McDonald's and other restaurants could only include toys in meals that have a half-cup each of fruit and vegetables and limited amounts of sugar, sodium.” I agree with all 3 of these points completely, especially with the 3rd one. It’s not a bad thing for kids to have a toy in their meal as long as both the meal and the toy have nutritious value. I also agree that doctors should agree with the law certainly when they see kids eating it in the ER. Kids there are there for a reason and sometimes McDonalds can make a condition worse. All of the board members agreeing was a good choice and it should help kids be healthier. I can relate to this article because of my school health policies and regulations. When I was in 5th grade for my birthday I brought in chocolate frosted vanilla cupcakes but was told I would not be allowed to share them with the class because they did not follow the rules. I learned from that and next year brought in caramel apples witch were allowed because of their nutritional value. Having polices and rules for nutrition will help keep kids healthy and active!
This is so crazy. Happy meals are suppose to be fun. Little kids even some adults look forward to going to McDonald's to get one. Just because they are unhealthy doesn't mean they should sell them.
I dont think they should add vegtables thats what fast foods all about. Besides how could you ban happymeals every kid loves them! They should put that frown upside down!
If McDonald's takes toys out of the Happy Meals, then children won't want the meal anymore, leading into McDonald's losing business. I honestly think that this world is trying to prohibit everything in reach in attempt to make this world a "better place". Clearly, by doing so would cause major problems.
I agree with that, but it does encourage kids to get healthier meals. My little brother and sister both love the toys and get the meal for that reason. If the fries go and fruit replaces them, they wont care just as long as they get the toy. But that picture of the clown is really creepy. That has nothing to do with McDonald's they should take that off.
This is not fair to little kids. I would be all crankey to know that my favroite fast food place is no longer giving toys away. I would drive my mom crazy. They sould not band toys and add new toys insted.
Wow that is very sad but confusing at the same time. They banded Mcdonalds happy meals. It sounds kind of sad to hear that children were at the hospital with happy meals in thier hands. But i think that it is a good idea to know that they should have put vegetables and fruits in the happy meals.
I think that they should be able to put toys back in the happy meals. My favorite kinds of fruits are strawberries, grapes, apples, oranges, and much much more. But eventually i hope that they figure something out soon. :(
Even though i don't like Mc Donalds they should not ban it and the toys help the parents out so the kids can stay calm in the car and there if kids don't have something to play with or do they get annoyed and i bet no one will visit San Fransisco anymore!
San Francisco should not ban Happy Meals because what will little kids eat when they go to McDonald's if they can't have Happy Meal plus they will not have a toy to play with when they done eating
I think it's a bad idea because if they don't put toys in the Happy meal the kids won't eat. In Happy Meals there are healthy foods so they're are not so bad to eat.
