Puppy rescued from atop a train going 50 MPH

Puppy rescued from atop a train going 50 MPH Four firefighters in a South Carolina town plucked a frightened black lab puppy from the top of a double-decker freight train car and delivered her to a new, loving home.

"We don't know how long she was up there," Liberty assistant fire chief Chris Rowland said Tuesday. "She was scared. She was ready to come down."

Rowland's team of four firefighters was called Sunday evening after Tina Parker of nearby Pickens spotted the pup while she and her family were stopped at a red light and saw the train pass by.

Parker said she saw what she thought was trash on the top of the train, but then it started moving and she realized it was a small dog.

"There's no question it was a puppy," Parker said.

She called 911 and followed the train to Liberty about six miles away.

A Norfolk Southern spokeswoman said they stopped the train, which was going about 50 mph while traveling from Pennsylvania to Atlanta.

The family helped firefighters find the car and firefighter Derek Sargeant scampered up a 24-foot extension ladder to get on top of the double-stacked containers.

"We don't know how she survived up there," Rowland said.

The Parkers named the dog Boxcar Hunter, or Boxy for short. They made an appointment with the veterinarian to have the dog checked, but Parker said it seems healthy and happy to be off the train. She has two other dogs and the new pup is getting used to her new surroundings.

Parker said no one knows who put the dog atop the train.

Rowland said the effort was a difficult one, given where the car stopped and how the firefighters had to maneuver to get the ladder in place alongside the tracks. But he said it was a good thing for all involved.

"We've rescued a cat here and there, but we've never had to get a dog off the top of a train," he said.

Comment: That's crazy how she can spot that dog moving. I would of just thought it was something else. And how did the dog get ontop of the train in the first place?

Summary: In south Carolina Tina Parker saw something black on top of a train, she thought it was trash. Until she seen it moving and realized it was a dog. So she called 91. The cops went after the train and stopped it. The train was heading from pennsylvania to atlanta. The cops ended up stopping the train. They used a 24 foot ladder to get ontop of the trains and rescued the dog.

I feel really bad for this dog. I'm surprised the dog didn't jump off of the train. It was probally hungry and thirsty. But I'm really happy that the dog is in a nice safe home.

I feel bad for that dog that got stuck on that train. Who put the poor dog up there? I hope it likes it's new home and the other dogs. It will probably never go near an other train ever again. That is sad how it got stuck up there. At least it went to a new home and to a nice loving family to take great care of it.

Reply- yeah, that is crazy. Why would anybody do that to a dog? That is just dumb and heartless. They should find this person and have him arrested for trying to kill this dog. Not only could the person have killed the dog, but he probably could have injured the people on the train.

I feel bad that the puppy was up there. I bet it was really scared. That puppy is so cute. I hope they found the owner.

Poor puppy! It must have been so scared! I would be terrified if I was on a train that went 50 miles an hour! My cousin adopted a dog that they found on the street. But it would have been way cooler if if was on a train! I wonder how long the dog was up there or more importantly how it got there! Well I hope the family is happy with their new pet!

Aw poor puppy. She must have been so scared because I know that I would of been! Especially if the train was going 50 miles per hour. How long did it take people to notice a cute little puppy scared to death, on top of a train? I have a 2 1/2 year old black lab at home. Her name is Zoey. If she was up there I would do anything to get her down. I can't believe that someone would do that to an animal or anything let alone a tiny little puppy. Shame on who ever did that. At least take the poor thing to a shelter. Not to a train station to put it on top of a train! Well at least that she is safe and in a new loving home.
