Canada's debut 18-0 demolition of Slovakia in front of a gleeful home crowd reopened the oldest question in women's hockey: Is this sport competitive enough to belong in the Olympics at all?
By scoring more goals than most teams will manage in an entire tournament, Canada managed the biggest blowout in games history. And there was a repeat Sunday, when the equally powerful American team did something similar to nearly-as-vulnerable China.
Jenny Potter scored three goals in the first 22 minutes while becoming the leading scorer in U.S. Olympic history, and the Americans opened the preliminary round of the women's tournament with a 12-1 romp over China on Sunday.
Meghan Duggan scored twice for the Americans, who got the expected result when a seasoned power takes on a developing team. China has never beaten the United States in 20 tries over nearly two decades, losing by an identical score in Salt Lake City.
Yet the Americans didn't match Canada's 18-0 rout of Slovakia on Saturday, in part because they cycled the puck and remained patient for scoring chances after taking a 7-0 lead early in the second period. With an all-out offensive blitz at UBC Thunderbird Arena, the Americans might have been able to run up the score in pursuit of a huge goal differential — but without criticizing Canada, they chose not to do it.

i dont think its a joke its a good sport i thnk bastketball is a joke hockey is one of the best sports in world it is very entrtaning also its about teamwork
Hockey is definitely not a "JOKE"! I can not even see why that they would think that hockey is a joke. But if any sport is a joke it is basketball. I have played hockey my hole life and it is NOT a "JOKE"!

No its not a joke its a great part part of the Olympics and they should all was have it yes Canada is good but that expected because they play it a year around but beating Canada is a great goal for some countries.
Of course they should still play hockey in the Olympics. Hockey is one of Olympics main sport. The only reason that Canada won by that much is because Canada invented hockey and a lot of people play .
The olympics are not a joke. Team Canada is always a good team in the Olympics. I look forward to the Olympics every year. Just because some teams in the Olympics are better than others, does not mean that the Olympics are a joke! I hope some day i can play in the Olympics myself.
I couldn't even think of Olympic Hockey being a joke. I might as well think that EVERYONE has forgotten about what a bunch of high-schoolers did in 1980. That moment was a everylasting moment of joy to America. It was the first time in a LONG time that the Russian hockey team had been beaten. I watch professional hockey, but i don't watch Olympic Hockey, but I don't think that anyone would think that it is a joke.
I disagree I think it just important as any other sport.Just because it a team thing doesn't matter. So it is not a joke. Just think if that was you and it was the only sport you could play and you wanted to b e noticed.
Olympic hockey is definitely not a joke. I don't know how Canada is 18 and 0. That is crazy, a big win. I bet USA is pretty mad about that and a lot of fans of USA olympic hockey. Congrats to Jenny Potter by scoring three goals in just about 22 minutes and becoming the lead scorer in the U.S. Olympic history. That is some crazy stuff.I bet she is really happy about that accomplishment that she has made. That means she got a hat trick.
I think that it is fair because who ever comes from what country plays for them. Also even if one team is better it still does not matter even if it is the same team every time well we all know it will be United States vs Canada. Canada is better by a little because that is like there main sport and the U.S has a lot of sports that they are good at. When they do basketball for the Olympics the U.S wins every single time and its not unfair.
