Obama to "hangout" on Google Plus

Obama to "hangout" on Google Plus President Barack Obama plans to "hang out" in a video chat room to answer questions about his State of the Union address, part of a White House effort to test new social networking tools and the latest evidence of the growing intersection of social media and politics.

Google announced Monday that Obama will participate in a 45-minute live video chat room known as a "Hangout," part of the online search giant's social networking site Google Plus. The chat will take place Monday afternoon, Jan. 30, capping a week of social media engagement the White House is planning around the State of the Union speech.

Obama speaks to Congress and the nation on Tuesday.

Google Plus will solicit questions over the video sharing site YouTube, and users will then vote on their favorites. The president will answer some video questions, and will also chat directly with a group of the questioners.

The exchange will appear on the White House Google Plus page, and will be live streamed on the whitehouse.gov website.

Obama participated in YouTube town halls after his last two State of The Union speeches, taking questions submitted to the video sharing site. The planned Hangout goes a step further, offering some of those questioners a chance to interact directly with the president.

This isn't really the story here. The story here is that Obama refused to respond to the top question: Will he legalize marijuana to end the drug war? The question wasn't posed by a random hippie from San Fransisco. It was posed by a cop. Obama responded "I don’t know what this says about the online audience," jokingly in response. (politico.com)

I have to admit recetly he has gotten more involved with the u.s public . Its king of nice to see he is starting to be a little bit more like Mrs. Obama and to more interactive with the media and the u.s public.

Doesn't a president have a job to do. hmm...I don't know maybe fix the economy get rid of national debt. something but use the internet. Do your job Obama.

I think what Obama did was great and very helpful. Asking people about how he's doing and what he can approve. I think what he did was genius. When people tell him how to improve he possibly could be the most improved president in history.

Obamas participation in a 45 minute video on google plus is very unique. Previous presidents have never tried this type of task. I think that since America is already advanced in technology in todays generation, this is a great way to address issues. It also allows for others to get a chance to interact directly with the president. I believe that Obamas approach to addressing questions about his state of the union was smart, since it is ongoogle plus.

I think this is a good thing Obama is doing. He needs to hear from the people how he can be a better president. Obama will learn some great things from doing this.

Despite a lack of public approval, I have to say Obama gives off the vibe that he can easily be connected to and seen as just another America. This is a very important trait of any president because you don't want to be seen as a superior in a negative way such as that of a dictator and after all, the government is supposed to be picked by the citizens. I think you can relate the famous Thomas Jefferson quote "When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny." While on the topic of previous presidents, John F. Kennedy comes to mind because he was seen as the "spring chicken" and well liked by the younger citizens, just like President Obama.

That is pretty cool doing a video chat with the president. Google will be used with even more people in the United States. Pretty cool. Yep

I think this well be a good way for the public to get a chance to speak with the president and hopefully get some new ideas out. Although, of coarse, there are the extremists that like to take things to far or say things that simply make the general population look like grade A morons. Hopefully though this will do more good than bad.

With all the commotion with being president (economics, government issues), I think it is nice that Obama gets time to have some fun. We seem to take advantage of it in our lives.
