Obama hails contributions of 'daring' women

Obama hails contributions of 'daring' women Crediting their role in the American story, President Barack Obama on Monday praised the nation's "daring, indomitable" women — including the one-time political rival who is now his secretary of state.

"Women like Hillary Rodham Clinton, who, throughout her career, has put millions of cracks in America's glass ceiling," Obama said in the grand East Room packed mostly with women. "It's because of them — and so many others, many who aren't recorded in the history books — that the story of America is, ultimately, one of hope and one of progress, of an upward journey."

Obama and Clinton competed for the Democratic nomination for the White House in 2008. Obama praised Clinton for her long-standing work on women's rights.

"We're doing all of this not only because promoting women's empowerment is one of the best ways to promote economic development and economic success," Obama said. "We are doing it because it's the right thing to do. I say that not only as a president, but also as the father of two daughters, as a son and a grandson, and as a husband."

In a reception for International Women's Day, first lady Michelle Obama took the opportunity to tweak her husband. "So I get to speak first while he stands and watches. I love this," she said to laughter. "Look at me adoringly," she told him.

"I can do that," Obama said, standing at her side.

Obama returned the humor. He spoke of women like his wife who have looked across the dinner table and thought, "I'm smarter than that guy."

"The fundamental truth (is) that in 2010, full gender equality has not yet been achieved; that the task of perfecting America goes on; and that all of us, men and women, have a part to play in bending the arc in America's story upward in the 21st century," Obama said.

The president said the nation's progress thus far was no accident. "It came about because of daring, indomitable women."

He thinks Hilary Clinton is an example of a great woman? No! What then, about Sarah Palin, to look at political leaders, she cracked down hard, and set Alaska on a great path. What about Mother Teresa? Amelia Earhart? Madam Curie? Rosa Parks? If Obama want so praise great women, he needs to do a whole lot more than praise Hilary Clinton and his wife. And why does Clinton get a good picture and Palin does not??

I think that it's glad to know that Obama cares about women's' rights. It's very reputable that he gave credit to the women of this country for progressing America through history. Women will always be the backbone of America and has been in the past. I think that it's an honor to know that President Obama cares about the achievements and history that the women has been through and done in the country.

I thought it was a good idea to ask Mrs.Clinton to be Secretary of State. She did have good decisions even if she did not make president. She is a very smart women and that is a great job.

i think president obama did good of praising Clinton and i agree with him she was there for a while and now shes his secretary so that was nice of what he did

He has done so much to help this country and he hasn't even been in office for that long.
This country was and still is in a wreck when he became president because of all the damage George W. Bush has caused well actually not George just all of congress that was in office during his reign so he is not to be all alone in the blame i will not just slander his good name because he did do some e good things for this nation and just because his bad outweighed the good dose not mean he still dose not deserve this recognition but what was up with sending all those troops to Iraq spending billions of dollars on reinforcement that was not needed us. We are in a recession but obama is slowly bringing us out of it through his trust worthy speeches and invigorating strengths and believing in our nation.Although we are in tough times he still finds room to compliment and recognize certain people in our nation doing good things to help us all out .

I think it was very nice of President Obama to credit women for their achievements. Some men may not think that this is fair, but if you really think about it, men get a lot of the attention in the world. So many woman have done so many great things and I think that it is about time that someone big in this country credits them for what they have done. On the other hand, men have done some great things too, so it is not fair to say that women have done it all. Gender doesn't matter to me. If you do something great, then you should be credited.

President Obama is exceedingly considerate to credit America’s progress through history to women but I believe that both women and men play a part in America’s greatest achievements. However true it may be that women have not had much recognition for their talents and achievements in the past, every day is a new day and through many recent years they have proved that their value is worth their weight in gold. Although amid the value of women, men are no less important. For they have played just as important parts as women. Overall the general idea is that both genders are equal and no person is above the other.

What i liked about the section was how they told how obama and clinton competed for the democratic nomination for the white house in 2008 . So that what i think is cool about this section and one more thing i liked is how they told about hillary rodham clinton.

Obama and Clinton animated the White house in 2008. I thought it was cool that Obama said the nations progress was an accident. I think it is so cool

i also think that Hilary Clinton i amazing. She should run for president.I bet you would be one of our best
president.I wanted you to win and be are president. But Obama is alright to.But i really wanted Hilary to win.
