Fifteen teenage girls report a mysterious outbreak of spasms, tics and seizures in upstate New York. But tests find nothing physically wrong.
Scores of adults in Northern California report crawling skin sensations and other bizarre symptoms. Government doctors find no physical cause after an extensive study.
The conclusion by experts is that these are just the latest examples of what used to be called mass hysteria. Now known as conversion disorder, sufferers experience real, but psychologically triggered symptoms.
It's rare, but scores or even hundreds of outbreaks have been recorded through the decades around the world.
Outbreaks, however, are unusual. Most involve females, often teenagers. Why is not clear. Some think it has to do with the way girls are socialized to deal with stress. Others say that females are just more likely to seek medical help — and thus appear in medical reports.
Recent examples include:
—In the fall of 2007, at least eight girls at a Roanoke, Va., high school developed strange twitching symptoms similar to those in upstate New York. The school district spent $30,000 to check the school, but investigators found no environmental cause.
—Earlier in 2007, a mysterious illness swept through a Catholic boarding school in Chalco, Mexico, causing 600 girls to suffer fever, nausea and buckling knees that left many unable to walk. Batteries of tests found no physical cause.
—In 2002, 10 teenage girls at a small, rural North Carolina high school had epileptic-like seizures and fainting. The school buildings were inspected, but nothing was found to explain the outbreak.
Allegations of fakery sometimes surface, but most experts believe these patients have real symptoms that they can't consciously control.
One thing they often have in common, is some kind of precipitating stress in their lives.
That was the case in Le Roy, N.Y., the site of the latest example of this disorder. Dr. Jennifer McVige, a pediatric neurologist based in nearby Batavia, has seen 10 of the teens. "All of the kids had something big that happened," like divorcing parents or some other upsetting situation, McVige said.

Hm, this does seem crazy. ;P But i could have a mental illness or somthing it isnt all women/girls right? ..... RIGHT? I just think they should take a closer look at them, thats all.
I'm a girl and all those boys that are commenting on this need to chill.i mean girls CAN be crazy sometimes,but who isn't?everyone is that's who.we're human and that makes us crazy.And emotional stress can really do dangerous things to people.so i believe these girls 100%.

Girls are crazy! Females in general are crazy, if they haven't showed and behavior proving it then you just haven't been around them long enough.
First off all , are you a girl ? If not then you have no right whatsoever to judge girls like that. Sure, there a bunch of girls that may be perky hyper type. Or maybe they might the type of girly girls that wear pink from head to toe. Not all girls are the same and until you feel how its like to be a girl , don't make false comments .

Well I think everyone is crazy, in different ways not just girls. But girls do get stereotyped to be crazy because honestly they can be sometimes! But were all human here and that’s why can all be crazy. I’ve personally seen men be just a crazy as women at times so it’s sad to see women get stereotyped more for this action.
I don't believe girls or boys are crazy. Crazy is a strong word, and I think nor boys or girls are crazy. I mean really, I think these people just need help. If anything is going on with them at home or anywhere else then it is their, and only their responsibility to tell someone. I do not believe that having physical contact with odd injuries is any type of mental or crazy happening. So no one should be going around posting stories or making up stories about these "crazy girls."
I am a boy, and I sure wish I had no gender. Girls are scared of a single fly and cause lots of divorces. Boys can be excessively cruel and spit and throw things. Both genders can have a big lack of paying attention. I say both genders are crazy. In fact, HUMANS are CRAZY!! THEY KILL EACH OTHER, ANIMALS, AND THE WORLD!! I even watched a movie where these dudes wanted to live on an alien planet but were rejected. Specifically, the movie is "Space: 1999 - The war games." Can be found on youtube.
Well I always knew girls were crazy, but I never knew that it was because of some serious condition, unusual symptoms, or and different types of disorders. I do not think that this study is true though, because I do not think girls are generally crazy because of problems they have, I think they just act crazy!
I don't think that girls are this crazy. I mean, even when their on their monthly. I don't get along with a lot of girls because of their drama. But, this is just not right. If someone is having problems at home they need to go talk to someone and get help. Others problems shouldn't be blamed on all of us girls, They just need help and stop trying to blame others for their problems. Girls are crazy but, not in this way.
