No weeknight TV Obama girls - how about you?
President Barack Obama says there's one sure thing parents can do to help their kids learn, regardless of financial means: Forbid them from watching television on school nights.
Of his own daughters, Malia, 11, and Sasha, 8, Obama told Essence magazine: "The girls don't watch TV during the week. Period."
The first thing they do after school is homework. If they haven't finished by dinnertime, around 6:30 p.m., they pick up where they left off after the meal. And after that, they can read until they hit the sack. Malia's bedtime is 9 p.m.; Sasha's lights go out a half hour earlier, he said.
"Very early on, we set expectations for Malia and Sasha in terms of them taking responsibility for their own education," Obama said. They got alarm clocks at age 4 to begin waking themselves up, making their own beds and getting themselves ready to get to school on time.
"We monitor them. But they are expected to be prepared to learn when they go to school," he said.
He and first lady Michelle Obama also began reading to their daughters when they were babies, and encouraged them to appreciate education.
"There's no doubt that Michelle and I have more resources and privileges compared with a lot of parents. We understand that," he said in the interview, appearing in the magazine's March issue. "But I don't care how poor you are — you can turn off the television set during the week."

I think that is not fair to watch Tv during the week. Because maybe the girls want to watch Tv but they can;t they have to do their homework and then they go to sleep early. At least they should if they want watch Tv only once.
Honesty this a a good way to raise up kids. This will keep the focus on their homework, and what comes first. In this order they won't worry about what is coming on television then whats the next problem on their homework. Obama keep up the good parenting.
Obama just dont like his kids watching MTV, and all that...but those are his kids and he can raise them however he wants, i just think its not right for him to do that, i mean they could go to a friends house and watch TV or they could go on YouTube and watch it and Obama wont even know...I'm just saying...
Summary
This story is about how president obama dont his daughters watch tv on weekdays, When they come home they do their homework then est dinner and then they read until they go to sleep. Barck obama and first Lady Michelle Obama read to them because they wanted them to appreciate their education andfor them to take responsibility.
Comment I think its a good idea because they want them to care for their education instead of watching tv all the time which will distract them from doing their work.
I think that having a weekday ban of TV is a pretty good idea. This is because normally when you sit down to watch TV, you watch it for 1-4 hours straight, nonstop. This could affect somethings from homework to bedtime. It is also pretty bad for your eyes but I think that on the weekends, it's okay. Weekends are a time to relax and do something fun, but weekdays are very different.=)
True, but, Obama could also let them watch something educational or something...i agree with what you are sayingg:), i never thought of it like that...
I think that's not fair because you should at least have a couple hours of television time a week and I know some of the stuff on t.v. is not educational ,but my children would have a little fun time in the white house if i was president.
they go to school come home do there homework , eat , read and then go to bed. they can watch t.v for two days only that's not fair i think they should watch t.v for a little bit or play something. i think when they go to bed they will be really beat.
I think that is really stupid not being able to watch t.v. i mean if you have your grades up and doing good then i think you should be able to watch t.v. but like i don't get to watch it because i get out of school at like 3:23 then i have like volleyball practice until 5:30 then i don't get home till like 6 then i eat and that takes like 30 mins to eat then i do homeworki til like 7:30 depending on how much i have then i take a shower that takes like 45 mins then i read or go to sleep so i don't have time to watch t.v. except on weekends.
If your poor then you cant afford tv, so therefore they cant watch tv first of all. Second of all, kids need atleast an hour of tv a day but not more than 3. I think that they are too strick with their kids.
