New law would make school lunches healthier
House Democrats are moving forward on first lady Michelle Obama's vision for healthier school lunches, propelling legislation that calls for tougher standards governing food in school and more meals for hungry children.
New standards would not remove foods like pizza or hamburgers from schools completely, but would make them healthier. Vending machines could be stocked with less candy and fewer high-calorie sodas.
Congressional passage of the bill would be only the first step. Many of the most difficult decisions, including what kinds of foods will be sold and what ingredients may be limited, will be left up to the Agriculture Department.
The legislation would also expand the number of low-income children eligible for free or reduced cost meals, a step Democrats say would help President Barack Obama reach his goal of ending childhood hunger by 2015.
"This important legislation will combat hunger and provide millions of schoolchildren with access to healthier meals, a critical step in the battle against childhood obesity," Mrs. Obama said in a statement after committee passage.

I think it is a WONDERFUL idea to make school lunches healthier. School has been the only thing that is offered as a drink in school lunch's that makes their students bones stronger. But i am not going to lie i do not drink milk ever at lunch anymore. School milk over 2/5 of it is spoiled. I had two spoiled milks in a two days in a row. The experience was so bad i haven't had a glass of milk anywhere besides my home. I understand you all are like," Well why doesn't she just check the date stupid." Well the problem is i always do. Even if it was May,7,1998 and the expiration date was May,16,1998 it would still be expired. It would be ten days apart from the day it was and it would still be spoiled. Making school lunches healthier is a wonderful idea, but some things aren't. Maybe put little water bottles with the milk. So that the children can choose between only milk and water. When Mrs. Obama said," a critical step in the battle against childhood obesity." It is a critical step. But the first big step according to me is milk and water. Milk i understand isn't the schools fault for its inconvenience, but the people that provide the milk need to make sure that the milk isn't spoiled before they deliver it. Mrs. Obama is completely right. It is horrible that children at 10 years old are obese, but we can simply change that. Milk and water. Salads, sandwiches. I will admit i do not eat my salad at school. It is because they put a gallon of Ranch dressing with 3 gallons of water so it is more water then it is dressing. So when you receive the lettuce it is wet and drenched with water dressing. If their was a healthy salad i would think it would be crispy on the side with a little, little cup of a little, little bit of dressing. Little steps that can be changed easily to help kids diet. Like Lady GaGa said," Changing the world one sequin at a time.":):):):):)
I think this is a great idea. A lot of people don't really know what they are eating when they get lunch in school. Even if some ingredients are limited, it could make a huge difference. More options of fruits and vegetables need to be available too. I believe that there are other places that this law should apply to as well such a fast food chains. This law could potentially be like a domino effect, when one place starts limiting certain things on their menu, another place might too. When people understand the amount of calories they or their children are eating, they can help cut back to lead a healthier life style.
I think that this is a very good idea becase most schools give there students pizza and stuff like that. When schools give there students a cup of fruit or some vegetables with nachos and think its healthy its not and its probably just going to make them throw up because its not a very good match. Students want junk food and food thats not healthy because trhere schools give it to the m and there probably every day they eat a different amount of junk food. Its just not what they eat at school its what they eat at home too most of the time a student can eat alot of junk food in one day and the parents think its healthy. So this would be a good idea for students and schools and maybe they would be use to it.
I hope they pass this law because more veggies and less candy and soda is better for everyone. As long as they don't completely get ride of sodas and candies I'm happy with it.
Its about time something like this happened it so hypocritical of the school to lecture to us about eating right and staying physically active and then having the school lunches be so unhealthy.
noooooooooooooo. they cant do that i wont let them. actually i dont have any power over that but i hope it doesnt pass the law. Or dont pass it until im out of school becuase i love eating the pizza in the lunches and the ice cream is good to.
More veggies on the plate and in the mouth means better nutrition and
grades for students if they cooperate, because it gives you energy and if you are full, you can concentrate more. I believe that the school lunches should be healthier. School lunches these days have a lot of fat and grease on them. This will raise the population of people that are obese if kids eat the same grease and fat every day. The new law should not remove foods like pizza and sloppy Joes but should make them healthier or not distribute them less often. Our school provides free and reduced lunches to children whose parents don’t make a certain amount of money. I believe that other schools around the world should start doing this. Then, if schools start making their lunches healthier, the population of people that are obese would go down and President Obama may be able to stop childhood obesity by 2015.
i don't think that healthier meals is a good idea , i mean having one once in a while is ok but not a every day thing , it's just not for me . The wheat bread here at school every day is already good enough for us.
I think that is a great idea. because you see a lot of over weight kids now. i think it is because of school lunches. All the lunches are now is mystery meat and milk. we need help with school lunch.
"New law would make school lunches healthier"
The government is getting too distracted with the obesity problem in the United States and isn’t solving the issue correctly. School lunches play a small part in the problem of child obesity. For instance when the text states, “ New standards would not remove foods like pizza or hamburgers from schools completely, but would make them healthier.” Pizza is a pretty healthy snack if you ask me; you have your calcium, grains, and vegetables, so how can you make that healthier? Making everyday school lunch foods healthier isn’t the real issue here. It’s more the children's parents who are un-educated in health and feed them junk food. By turning everyday school lunches healthier it is keeping the students healthy at school, yet lunch is only one-third of what they consume in a day. The parents control what is eaten at home, and since we are in a recession a lot of families are choosing cheaper foods (McDonald's). Some families are choosing fast food over healthier foods because a family of four can eat dinner for under ten dollars as opposed to buying a salmon fillet, brown rice, and green beans, which would cost a substantial amount more. Sadly, some families don’t know the importance of eating healthy. Another reason why the school lunches aren’t that big of a variable in child obesity is because in order to burn off the food children need exercise. Even if the child eats the normal amount of calories in a day, they still need to burn it off. For example, I’m not overweight at all, but if I didn’t play outside as much as I do I would weigh a lot more. I easily eat 3500-4000 calories a day, but I play outside for two to four hours each day (more on the weekends). It’s not only the food that is affecting obesity. There are some distractions keeping kids from exercising or playing outside too. For example, playing with video games and other electronics. School lunches play a very small part in child obesity, so the government has to stop worrying about it.
