Kids compete in Suffolk beauty pagent

Ramsey Griffin has wanted to be a beauty queen ever since she saw a pageant on TV, said her mother, Tina Griffin. So Saturday, the blond, blue-eyed 3-year-old got her chance, taking the stage in the Million $$$ Baby Model Search Pageant at the Whaleyville Community Center. Her motivation: a sparkly tiara. Her diet secret: bologna sandwiches and Goldfish crackers. Her signature move: waving and blowing a kiss to the judges. She took home the top title, Super Star Model, and the coveted tiara.

"It's just like a movie," the beauty queen said.

The pageant drew three aspiring models: Griffin, 2-year-old Penelope Kokolis and 9-month-old Yianni Kokolis. They were all competing for the first time.

Penelope Kokolis' curly brown locks won her the best hair category and the toddler category. Her brother, Yianni, won most photogenic and the boy infant model category.

Million $$$ Baby is a pageant system started by the owner of the Florida-based Million $$$ Baby swimwear company, said Valerie Sparks, the pageant's Virginia state director.

The Suffolk competition was one of 19 preliminary pageants held throughout Virginia since December, Sparks said. There was also a preliminary event in Virginia Beach on Friday.

Athena Kokolis said she brought her daughter Penelope from Williamsburg to compete because she wants her to have the opportunity to try different things. She brought her son Yianni because "he's just too cute not to." She chose Million $$$ Baby because the pageant doesn't require makeup or extravagant costumes.

The winners can compete in Williamsburg in July for the chance to go to the national pageant in Orlando, Fla., in October, Sparks said.

The good thing about Million $$$ Baby: "It's natural," said judge and pageant director Diane Yopp. "No makeup, no hair pieces, no false teeth."

That cute, but whoa, those things are a lot, and i mean a lot of money to enter. The only thing i have wrong with pageants is a lot of those girls act like brats, not all, just some and they all look older than their age on stage. That show toddlers and tiaras on TLC is just ridiculous. Those parents spoil their children rotten. Although, I am happy for this girl and i congratulate her because seems sweet.

I think you shouldn't put your child in a beauty pageant i saw on a show that the child starts to get spoiled mean and want to steal.
One of the pageant's parents didn't even want to do a pageant but she did it once and just kept doing it like she was addicted to it. The money i thing that's how it gets to then it has been a bad influence to the children and the Parents.

I've always wanted to be in a pageant. To me, I'm only feel BEAUTIFUL when I'm dressed up, It's wonderful these girls get to participate in something like this at such a young age..

awwwwww having a baby in a pagent i think is the most cutes thing and then compete for money, i wiould love to be in a pagent.

That's absolutely pathetic!!! I think it's a terrible thing to put a child less than ten years old in a pageant!!! Those pageants judge girls on how pretty they are and all of those questions they have to answer, I bet none of those answers they give are real!!! All they care about is getting a big tiara and a sash around their glittering dress that they made their moms spend the rent money on.

I'm sorry but, I don 't really agree with you. You must have never been in a pageant before. I personally have done many and the things you said aren't exactly true. Little girls don't just do pageants for a crown. Everyone of my pageant friends, and I do them because we have a great time, and it's like a performance. Also, I always answered truthfully. For example, when I was 6 years old I was asked "If you were a Disney princess which would you be?" My answer: "Airial because she has a pet fishy!"

Kids are never to young to be put in Pageants!! I love to do pageants! They are fun, and you meet new friends, and I have never seen a pageant get to out of hand anyway. Yes, girls do go home with broken hearts, crying a water fall because they didn't win, but they have to understand that they are beautiful no matter what anyone thinks or says. I also love the Idea that the Beauty Pageant is a natural Beauty Pageant! The Pageant I do National American Miss, it is also a Natural Beauty Pageant! There is no make-up for children under the age of 12. When you are 12 or above, you can wear make-up but it has to be light, and there is no such thing as fake teeth, spray tans, or glitzy dresses in this pageant. I think it is a great idea for children to do pageants! But, they should not be forced into doing it, just because you want your kid to become famous or a super star!

I think parents should put their kids in pageant's more often. Pageant's help build up the kids self esteem and make them more confident in themselves. Most kids and babies I know that are in pageant's are less shy and they learn that they don't have to win everything to feel important and noticeable.

Most people think that putting their kids in beauty pageants is a bad thing. I think differently. I think every girl should at least get a chance to get up on stage and strut her stuff, no matter what the cost is. Also, I dont understand why people think it is so wrong to put makeup on your child, give them a spray tan, and some extensions if it makes them look prettier and win the title.

I think it is so cool that the little 3-year old girl won the pageant. I think that this pageant is fair because you don't have to have false teeth, lots of makeup on like toddlers and babies, and you don't have to buy $1,000 dresses/outfits.
