Jewelry maker makes bracelets safer for kids
National jewelry seller Tween Brands Inc. will effectively eliminate the toxic metal cadmium from the bracelets, necklaces and other items it sells. It covers jewelry intended for children, teens and adults, expanding the age range from the preteen girls who had been the focus of concern after high levels of cadmium in jewelry surfaced over the past year.
Cadmium is a soft, whitish metal that, if ingested over time, can damage the kidneys and bones; a large-enough single dose can kill. Cadmium also causes cancer, and some research suggests it can stunt the development of young brains.
Last July, Tween recalled about 137,000 pieces of jewelry that had been made in China due to unspecified high levels of cadmium. While test results from that recall have not been publicly released, some of the five other cadmium jewelry recalls orchestrated last year by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission involved pieces that were more than 90 percent cadmium, according to laboratory testing conducted for The Associated Press.
Under the agreement, starting in January 2012, Tween faces fines if it sells jewelry that is more than 0.03 percent cadmium — a background level that doesn't suggest the cadmium was intentionally added. A state judge still needs to approve the settlement, but that is almost never an issue in these cases.
The case against Tween was brought by the Center for Environmental Health, a California-based group that has long used the state's Proposition 65 to force companies to reduce levels of harmful materials in consumer products. The center said it hoped that the settlement, filed with California's attorney general Friday, would serve as a model for the 39 other retailers or jewelry suppliers against which it has filed cadmium actions over the past year.

Wow! After reading "Jewlery Maker Makes Bracelets Safer For Kids" I was surprised!!! I never knew about cadmium before...I guess I learned something new! I can't believe it can give you cancer or possibly kill you if it is a higher dose! Why didn't jewlery makers just not use a lot of cadmium before, it would have saved a lot of lives since it can kill or harm people's bodies really badly??? It doesn't make scence?!?!?!
i cant believe i could be dying slowly and i could have cancer that is so wrong. why would they just now tell us that this is happening to teens.
This is defiantly a good way to make bracelets safer for older and younger children. People don't understand how harmful bracelets could actually be. This company is making it safer so that people wont have to worry about all that. The people can just wear there bracelets with no problem.
On January 2012 kids stores like Justice are changing the metal that is used in their bracelets because they have found more tweens that buy these brands of bracelets are in risk of getting sick because of the metal cadmium that is used in some jewelry. I think that changing the metal in the jewelry is a good idea because some metals are dangerous like some kids like to chew on their bracelets.
That's good that they are making them safer. It's good because it can kill you. A lot of people shop at Justice and a lot of people buy their bracelets. Also i fa little kid gets it it could be dangerous, but now that they changed it is OK. Now bracelets are safer.
Good idea I have one. Mine says big sister and my little siss, brianna, says little sister. By the way my sister and I love Justice. I mean what girl wouldn't
See?This is why i never shop at justice but mostly because that store has to much pink, otherwise i think its good that their taking this "cadmium" thing out of the bracelets. Good job justice.
This is very odd for a company trying to sell to younger costumers. This is very harmful, if a child accidentally ate this they could have very bad brain damage, of even die! That's scary! I cant believe that they would even think about putting this harmful chemical in a piece of jewelry made for younger people.
This is a good idea because this could help save someones life. Even if it saves only one person that made a difference so it would be worth it.
I find that very bad because if girls wear them, they will have bad brain development, be very stupid, and they may not graduate high school.
