It's about the smiles
If you've hit lunch-hour traffic near California Avenue and Stockdale Highway, chances are you've met Priest Morrison.
Every Monday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., that corner becomes his cubicle, sans the computer, phone and desk. Instead, it's a place where he waves, dances and twirls a Little Caesars Pizza sign, hoping he's compelled you to pick up an order or two.
"Sometimes it takes more than the sign to grab people's attention," Morrison said. "I help people get in better moods. I help make their days a little better."
When Morrison started the pizza sign gig, he was sure it wouldn't last long. He's worked other sigh-holding jobs and short durations -- a few months here and there -- are the norm for this kind of work.
Yet here he is, almost a year later, putting Little Caesars in the corner spotlight.
Little Caesars contracts with a company that provides them with sign-holders. So Morrison's "agent" must be pleased.
Priest "is very nice," says Taher Hamdoun, the Little Caesars supervisor who is known more as "Mr. T."
Priest "likes to work even if it's hot. It would be over 100 degrees, and I'll tell him 'You know, you don't have to work today. It's kinda hot.' But he says, 'No, it's OK. I want to go to work.'"
In this heat, really?
No sweat.
"It's a matter of who can literally 'take the heat'," Morrison said. "There is a high turnover rate for this type of position because people just can't take it. But it's not really that bad."
Not if you stay hydrated.
Morrison goes through an average of two gallons of water each day. He follows a diet that includes plenty of Gatorade.
"I take potassium pills every day and eat a lot of bananas," Morrison said. "It's just a matter of the food content. I eat hamburgers at lunch, but how many of those can you eat? So I try to add some variety to my lunches and alternate between chicken sandwiches and hamburgers. But the chicken sandwiches don't give you the same energy boost as a burger."
Another source of energy is the attention from passers-by.
Passing drivers honk their cars regularly. Waves and smiles are endless.
"It's about the smiles," Morrison said. "Road rage can be terrible."
Ooooh yeah.
He says he's seen 16 car crashes.
Of course, he's had some bad luck a time or two.
"You get yelled at and given the finger often," Morrison said. "All I'm doing is selling pizza. I don't understand it."
More often than not, people seem to be impressed by his act.
"I've had people bring me radios and even MP3 players. But I just listen to the music that is in my head," Morrison said. "I go over songs that I like and know and try to remember the lyrics. I've found that it averages about 30 songs per shift. That's how I save myself from getting bored. Also, there have been a lot of times that young adults will come out here and dance with me. It's fun and hilarious!"
