Iran bans Barbie
Police have closed down dozens of toy shops for selling Barbie dolls in Iran, part of a decades-long crackdown against "manifestations of Western culture," the semiofficial Mehr news agency reported Friday.
Barbie dolls are sold wearing swimsuits and miniskirts in a society where women must wear headscarves in public, and men and women are not allowed to swim together.
Authorities started confiscating the dolls from stores in 2002, denouncing what they called the toys' un-Islamic characteristics. The campaign was eventually dropped.
Iran that year also introduced its own dolls — twins Dara and Sara, designed to promote traditional values with modest clothing and pro-family values — but those proved unable to stem the Barbie tide.
Despite bans on many Western books, movies, satellite TV channels, music, haircuts and fashion, young people maintain their interest in that culture.
Iran's state TV channels broadcast several Western and Hollywood films every week. Islamists have repeatedly tried to fight what they see as a cultural "invasion" since 1979 Islamic Revolution that ousted a pro-Western monarchy.
Since then, importing Western toys has been discouraged by the regime.
In 2008, the Iranian judiciary warned against the "destructive" cultural and social consequences and "danger" of importing Barbie dolls and other Western toys. Even so, Iranian markets have been full of them. One-third of Iran's population of 75 million is under 15.

OK, it's a just decision and I don't want to complain about it . That's only another attempt to decrease Western influence on the country and it's ancient culture. Most of you would agree that those Barbi dolls don't look like women in Iran or any other Arabian country. Sometimes it's hard to believe, that even people from the west can appear at least 60% the same as the Barbi's appearance. So, the decisions of the Iranian government look pretty obvious and so unacceptable to the Western world. Is not a secret, that Iran doesn't particularly like American culture. That was pretty understandable when American citizens were trapped in the embassy of the US 30 years ago. So, now, saying, that the US is the greatest evil ever, they get rid of bad influences, supporting everything by Islamic traditions .
I don't know what it's like to live there and/or have a religion that requires people to dress extremely modestly; but I know that if I were the government and had that religion, I might actually have done the same thing. I can't say whether it's a smart or dumb decision; but I'm glad it isn't a horrible law that effects the goodness of people.
News: In Iran many toy shops are closed because of them selling Barbie dolls. They say it's "manifestations of Western culture." Barbie dolls are sold with swim suits and skirts, but the people are not allowed to wear that there. Iran made their own dolls, Dara and Sara. Despite bans on many Western items many people are interested in that culture. Iran's state TV channels include some Western and Hollywood films every week.
Iran is a theocracy, meaning their government is operated by their religious beliefs and their god(s), which is why I understand why they would ban Barbies. I still believe it is against the citizen's of Iran rights that they are told how to spend their money.
This article is about Iran bands Barbie.
I can't believe that Iran would band barbie dolls because there plastic Barbie dolls not real and what is the point of banding Barbie dolls for toddlers because any mother can get a plastic Barbie doll for their kid For Christmas and banding Barbie dolls are just really stupid.
Wow, Ive heard that woman have to walk behind their husband. That sounds pretty unfair to me but that is how they have to live. And this makes sense to why they banned the barbie doll.
I think this is violating the people of Iran's rights. It may be a part of their religion but not everyone there foollows their religion. The people have a right to buy any kind of barbie they want. It is disapointing to hear this.
I don't really understand how a doll can cause chaos but its their culture than so be it. I only see barbie on TV but I still think its a little creepy. But it their choice their government can do what every they think is right.
I totally agree that if barbie dolls cause chaos is their country then they should be banned. Especially if it is offensive to their religion. Maybe they can make a kind of barbie doll that is wearing stuff that doesn't cause people to be offended.
I think this is perfectly logical that Iran is banning Barbie. I mean really they can't make an enjoyable doll with clothes on? Good job Iran!
