Homeless science whiz invited to hear Obama

Homeless science whiz invited to hear Obama A homeless New York teen who's a semifinalist in a prestigious national science contest has been invited to watch President Barack Obama's State of the Union address.

Brentwood High School senior Samantha Garvey has been invited to the Jan. 24 speech as a guest of Long Island Congressman Steve Israel.

Garvey's story of academic success despite financial hardships has gained nationwide attention.

Last week, she was named one of 300 semifinalists in the Intel science contest. She's currently living in a homeless shelter, although Suffolk County officials are renovating a home for the Garvey family.

Israel says he was moved by the aspiring marine biologist's story.

He's offered Garvey a prestigious gallery ticket. Her parents would watch from Israel's office.

i think that was nice of the president to invite her because shes homeless now that could make her feel good in herself and she might do something good for herself.

How this girl was just in school and then she gets invited to meet the President , is amazing . She is homeless and i feel bad . I always want to help the people on the side of the street , i think its good the Mr. Obama is inviting her too see his speech .

I can only imagine how happy this girl must be! She's showed the nation that even though she's homeless, she's really smart and can still do things. I think that her story will inspire homeless people. It's touching, that the girl can come from a different background and homelife, and still be smart, and do all kinds of stuff. She didn't give up on herself just because she's homeless.

I think its great that she has kept up her hopes while she is homeless. Thats exactly what more Americans need to be doing right now. She is a great inspiration. She is also proof that just because you don't come from an amazing home doesn't mean that you aren't an amazing person. I hope more people find out about her and learn from her.

This just shows you how much America is sinking back into poverty. This young women has to deal with this. Even some of our greatest minds have to deal with homelessness. She was one of 300 to win in a science contest. Samantha may have caught a lucky break, but many more just like her deal with this every day. I think that America can work through this, but we must work together.

This is such a touching story which can give hope to a lot of homeless people. This girl is deffinalty extroidinary, going from being homeless to a semifinalist in a prestigious national science contest. This girl shouldn't just be congradulated for becoming a semifinalist, but because she actually entered and tried. Hopefully this will help out her family, and open many doors for Samantha.

Her parents must be so glad that their daughter is that smart! It gave the family attention, which hopefully will aid in them finding a new home and not have to live at a homeless shelter. Her gift could take her to great heights, and help her family sustain a household.

Wow that's amazing that just goes to show that everyone has a chance to make something of themselves. I like science a lot too so I'm going to use her as a little bit of an inspiration.

That is absolutely amazing! I mean, she was homeless, and she pushed her way through life, and now she gets to meet Obama! That would be hard, but she did it. How inspiring! :)

this is amazing! it really shows me that you can do any thing if you put your mind to it! she sounds like a genius to me.
