Gray whale swims free from beach

Gray whale swims free from beach An incoming tide has helped a young gray whale swim free off a beach along the Washington coast where it had been stranded in shallow water on a hot summer day.

Marine biologists had draped the whale in a wet sheet after it was found Thursday morning. They and volunteers spent hours dousing it with buckets of water to try to keep it cool at Harborview Park in Everett.

National Marine Fisheries Service spokesman Brian Gorman says the whale was able to swim free Thursday afternoon. He says the whale is emaciated and the outlook isn't good for the animal because gray whales don't normally come ashore unless they are injured or sick.

About 40 feet long, the whale is described as probably 5-6 years old. Gray whales can live to 50 or older.

How did it get there? When did it get there? How lang was it there? How long is it? Wy did it show up there?

I feel bad for it. I'd be scared to if i were stuck with no way of escape. It be bad if it got hurt. whales in general is are endangered.

Ya!!!!!!!!!! go whale :) Im so happy for him/her it is so cute. I wish I could see a whale. I want to help him. I would probably call him to come visit my house.

Poor whale I hope he isn't to traumatized from the experience. Good thing the biologists found him I wouldn't know what to do with a baby gray whale.

wow that is really sad that the whale got stuck on the beach but it does get happy when he swims free back into the wild ocean

This article is about a gray wale who swam to shore. Since Marine biologists and volunteers spent hours dousing it with buckets of water to try to keep it cool it probably didn't get that heart. But it probably was sick because they say that whales usually only show up on land if there heart or sick. But at least the whale was rescued.

It would be so cool to see a whale on they shore. I love animals and would do all I could to help one in need. I wonder what went through peoples heads when they saw the whale. I bet they were afraid. I hope the whale survived.

Wow! That whale is very lucky, and must have good survival traits. Thank goodness it swam to shore or else it probably would not have lasted out in the oil spill like most sea animals didnt. It is nice to know it was saved, pretty much by itsself.
