Giant hailstone breaks record

Giant hailstone breaks record A giant hailstone that fell in central South Dakota has broken U.S. records, even though the man who found it says it melted somewhat while waiting to be evaluated.

The NOAA's National Climate Extremes Committee says the hailstone found in the town of Vivian on July 23 measures 8 inches in diameter and weighs 1 pound, 15 ounces.

The committee says the South Dakota ice chunk breaks records set by hailstones discovered in Nebraska and Kansas.

Ranch hand Leslie Scott says the hailstone was about 3 inches larger when he found it. Scott says he put it in the freezer but that he couldn't prevent some melting because of an hours-long power outage that followed the storm.

thta is the biggest hail ball i have ever seen but imagine getting hit in the head with that it would probably either knock you out or crack ur head open that would absolutly be a scary storm.

WOW I don't want one of those falling on my head that would leave a serious bruise on some on someones head. A world record that is amazing.

That's a giant hailstone! I can't believe how big it is. It's eight inches! That's almost bigger than my head and my little cousin's head combined, and he's only nine months!

wow i would not want that think to hit me it looks pritty big and to the looks of it it probably could kill someone if it hit them.

It is pretty amazing how big that hailstone is. Imagine what could have happened if that had hit something more important. It would have probibly made a hole 5 feet in diameter. I'm just glad nobody got hurt.

what the heck. that looks like someone had shaped it to look like that but its unnatural to even be that big. plus how did it not even melt by then.

It would be funny if the giant piece of hail had hit someone and then it started hailing a lot of those things and someone went outside and kept on getting hit by them.

A hailstone that size could destroy windows. That is a very large hailstone. I would be surprised if it happen in Texas or Oklahoma. That could be as bad as a EF-1 or EF-2 tornado.Compared to a tornado, the damage could be like an EF-1 with broken windows.Hail happens in the Midwest.Compared to that hailstone,The hailstones in the may 24,2011 storms were small.Hailstones that big happens in Kansas. If i saw hail that size i would stay indoors. In large tornadoes large hailstones happen.I will be extremely surprised if i saw hail that size.

I think that this article can affect my everyday life because when I am somewhere in the area where the hailstone had landed I can be aware of these things. This will affect the future because we now know that there is such things as 10 inch hailstones!

That is one big piece of ice. Can you imagine what that would be like if it hit your car? All the damage it would cause to a city if that size of hail fell everywhere. That would be like a miniture apocolypse. That piece of ice doesn't look real, but what can you not believe anymore these days.
