Excuse me? Boy's burp lands him in jail

Excuse me? Boy's burp lands him in jail A 13-year-old was handcuffed and hauled off to a juvenile detention for burping in class, according to a lawsuit filed against an Albuquerque school principal, a teacher and school police officer.

The boy was transported without his parents being notified in May after he "burped audibly" in PE class and his teacher called a school resource officer to complain he was disrupting her class.

The suit comes one year after the same attorney settled a class action lawsuit against the district that was prompted by the arrest of a girl who civil rights attorney Shannon Kennedy said "didn't want to sit by the stinky boy in class."

"I am trying to get all the stake holders in a room to get people properly trained to prevent this from happening," Kennedy said.

Kennedy said the problem lies with the schools more than with the law enforcement agencies.

"It lands in the lap of the principal. There are good schools and bad schools. The principals ... who are handling their schools properly don't need to have children arrested. It's ridiculous."

When I first saw this title i didn't think it was true but it was. I didn't think you could arrested for that. If he burped on purpose I can see why they did call the police but if he didn't do it on purpose I think they shouldn't had call the police. I don't think I will burp class ever.

This is ridiculous. I know that it is not polite to burp, but arresting a kid for burping in school is a little harsh. If our school arrested people for doing stupid stuff like that we would not have many students left. I think there are worse things happening in schools that school administrators should be focusing on. The author wrote this to inform the reader about a ridiculous event that happened in this school.

This is crazy! Kids get arrested for lots of strange reasons but this is just crazy. It is not like he committed a crime, he simply burped. Schools should not be worried about a kid not saying excuse me after he burps, they should be worried about the other kids doing worse things. I can see a detention or going to the principal's office but this is just too much.

It's amazing what people will do today. I have read several stories about kids getting arrested for strange reasons but this is just ridiculous. I could understand a send to the principles offices, or even detention but this punishment was not fit for the crime. It seems that teacher just want to arrest students these days. I hope that the principle realized that she over reacted about the situation.

This is just wrong. Why would they arrested people for burping? Many people out in the world do this, its not wrong burping. Don't take kids to jail for burping it comes in life no matter what. Burping is not a distraction adults, kids, and babies do it so why is their that when a 13 year old student burps in school they arrest him?? This is just bad don't arrest people for burping.

What I think this totally wrong if you burp you get sent to juvenile detention. I dont think this is cool at all I mean you cant send anybody to juvenile detention just for burping in class.

This is unbelievable that a 13-year old boy is sent to jail for burping in class. If he gets sent to the principal's office, that is already good enough in my opinion. I don't think there is a need for police officers to be involved because don't they have anything else more important to worry about? Police officers should be involved with situations much. much, more important. Why didn't the kid just get an infraction? What do his parents think? It seems to me police officers have changed a lot in the past decade.(=

This is unbelievable that someone would send a 13 year old boy to jail for burping and not saying excuse me. What kind of school would not tell the parents what the school is doing with their child. The principal needs help, and needs help running the school much better.

This is ridiculous! The teacher and principal are crazy to send a kid to jail for something that happens naturally. Not everyone can control everything that comes out of their mouth.

That's ridiculous. "Oh he burped so lets send him to jail." No! What court could possibly justify an arrest of a child for a natural bodily function?! I don't even understand how the police who made the arrest didn't laugh at the call from the school and not respond because there are far more important matters to be worrying about.
