Ellen DeGeneres, the newest judge on "American Idol," hit the right notes with "American Idol" viewers Tuesday night, but she said that Simon Cowell is "actually meaner than I thought. It's hard to listen to him tell people things and for me not to go, 'You poor thing!'"
Fans took to the Internet to express their pleasant surprise over the 52-year-old funnylady's debut as the singing competition's fourth judge. DeGeneres assumed her judging panel post for Tuesday's episode chronicling the first round of "Hollywood Week," the cutthroat post-audition phase in which 181 contestants will be narrowed down to 24 semifinalists.
The majority of folks posting about DeGeneres on Twitter praised her performance. Some said they were only tuning in for DeGeneres, but not everyone was a devotee. A denim ensemble worn by Degeneres, also host of "The Ellen Degeneres Show," was mocked by a few tweeters.
When Fox announced that DeGeneres, an Emmy winner with no formal music experience, would be the new judge last September, fans were divided over the unlikely replacement for Paula Abdul, the sugary sweet pop singer who judged "Idol" since it debuted in 2002 then left amid contract negotiations after the eighth season ended last year.
As expected, DeGeneres' critiques were punctuated with humor, but she didn't hold back the cruelties either. She joked something seemed wrong with a beatboxer's microphone — just before sending him home. An admittedly drowsy DeGeneres later informed one dull singer that the performance "almost put me right out."

No, Simon is not a bully. He might be mean but he tells the truth.. At least he doesn't lie to the people and say that they can sing when they can't. That wouldn't be right, because then if he did do that they won't get teased and try to sell a record but no one would buy it because they can't sing!!!

i dont think that simon is mean or a bully. He speaks whats on his mind thats all, and tells it like it is. Simon is what made american idol it, now the show has changed and is not the same.
In my opinion.Simon is very mean.But i think its just cause hes telling the truth.And sometime the truth hurts. Sometime he goes a little far. But Hes just being honest. I think thats okay.But when u make someone cry then u went a little to far there to hurt there feelings. Just say the truth but not hurt their feeling at the same time.
I don't think that Simon is a mean person. When he was on American Idol, he spoke the truth. He didn't go easy on the contestant. The contestants got better every week when Simon was on there. They still do get better but Amercan Idol isn't the same without him. It is still a good show but isn't the same.
I believe that Simon is really a bully. He is every thing that the definition of bullying says. He is so mean to the contestants on American Idol. He tells them in the most hateful ways. Simon makes lots of the contests cry. I have seen it and it is so bad. I don't know how he can do that to people. He should just not be on American Idol and i know how people say he brings the laughter but picture him to saying that mean stuff to you.
I do not think that Simon is a bully or mean. I just think that he needs to try saying his constructive criticism down to a nicer way to say it. He is a very forward guy, and says what it on his mind. He made the American Idol show a actually real singing show. You can not have a push over judge, it does not work that way.
I watched the Ellen Degenres show when she pranked taylor swift on youtube. SO FUNNY!!! Ellen is hilarious!!!! :) GO ELLEN!!! Her Halloween shows are my favorites, with guys jumping out of bushes and A LOT of pranks!!!
yes i do think simon is mean, even the people that try out and can actually sing he still tell them they not good enough or they cant sing and that can hurt someone's self-esteem.
