Do you have a right to playground swing?
Elementary school playgrounds in one West Virginia county are losing their swing sets.
Swings are being removed from Cabell County schools in southern West Virginia in part because of lawsuits over injuries.
Cabell County schools safety manager Tim Stewart said Wednesday that a lot of parents are accusing him of being un-American, but he says the cost of maintaining a safe surface is too expensive.
Stewart says a lawsuit in the past year involved a youngster who broke his arm jumping off a swing like Superman. It was settled for $20,000.
Other equipment such as monkey bars will remain. Stewart says the schools are able to maintain the proper protection underneath them.

um i think that school swings should not be banded from school because they are fun to swing on.....Even though i get dizzy on them and my head hurts......THE SCHOOL SWINGS SHOULD NOT BE BANDED FROM SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I like to ride on swings with my friends and i always like to jump off of the swings and land on my hands!!!!!!!!!!! We have swings at my house and i ALWAYS jump off my swing!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)
i think yes we should have a a swing playground because you could swing higher and swings are really fun and i jump off the swing and the swings are sometimes bumpy and high!!!!!!
I think take away kids’ right to play swing is unfair. Kids get into injury not only their own fault but part of belongs to school. In the school, they suppose need to take care students and make safety; take away the swing will be unfair to some kids who still want to play swing and think swing is safe. Why schools did not concerned the opinion from the people who still want the swing? Some parents sue the school because the swing causes the injuries of kids; however, the accident is always happening no just because of the swing. Even the swing did not exist in future, there are still have some other accidents happen. School should teach kids not jump off the swing to look like a Superman or do other dangerous actions. Without swing, students will be lot of fun in school. I believe that school should keep the swing.
I think that it is not fair for the kids that want to use swings. Instead of taking them off they should just check them every time to see if they are safe. Also there should be a teacher watching the swings so the children could be safe. The students should be careful to not jump off the swings or lean back. If a child brakes the rules they should just be removed from the swings. That is what i think they should do to keep the swings for students.
If the kids think that telling their parents that they fell of the swings and broke their arm is cool. Think again all you are going to do is lose your jump and other kids fun. Trying to do superman from a swing is just plain dumb. Why not try doing that over you bed were it is safer. Swings believe it or not a good thing for exercise.
i dont thibk they should take out the swings because thats like the best part of the playground and they are fun, of course they are dangerous sometimes but maybe they can make them not dangerous?? im not sure but i still dont think they should take swings away.
I think that it's so dumb. Their just little kids. They should have fun right now that they are young and have lots of energy. They should stop taking the swings away.
WOAH!?! This is ridiculous. You teach your kids to make right decisions like dont jump off of a swing five feet in the air when its above cement or a hard surface. Accidents happen like that all the time and im sure teachers set rules on safety. The parents know when their children do that theirs a possibility of injury but it shouldnt be blamed on schools unless the swing was damaged and came off not just when a child falls off.
That is so dumb its not the schools fault that the kids get hurt. People can get hurt on almost anything. Also swing are like super fun. That is also sad for the other kids who don't get hurt. But i guess I get it if they take away the swings but not get a law suit. So I hope the kids in Cabell County get there swings back.
People are too quick to sue. Maybe parents need to spend more time with their kids to teach them what to do and not to do. My mom took me to the park all the time when I was little. And if I did anything stupid, she let me know about it really fast! I mean come on, let kids be kids. Part of being a kid is playing at the playground during recess! I looked forward to recess and playing with both my friends and on the playground!
