Did we get healthier in the past decade? Nope.
Did we get healthier in the past decade? Nope.
About 10 years ago the government set some lofty health goals for the nation to reach by 2010. There are more obese Americans than a decade ago, not fewer. We eat more salt and fat, not less. More of us have high blood pressure. More children have untreated tooth decay.
But the nation has had better luck raising childhood vaccination rates, lowering cancer death rates, increasing smoking laws and reducing most types of work injuries.
Right now, health officials are developing goals for 2020. The details are far from settled, but an advisory panel of experts has recommended that the new goals be more realistic. They also hope to make it more inviting to the public and perhaps — less ambitious.
The program called "Healthy People 2020" may be an online document that links to Web sites and sources for nutrition and exercise advice and other ways people can improve their own health.

I fully agree that humans today eat more fatty foods rather than healthy foods. I think we should exercise more than staying inside and sitting on the couch watching TV. We should also eat healthier rather than pig out every night. We should eat fruits and vegetables more than potato chips.
I agree with the beginning of the article, about how Americans have gotten fatter, and I somewhat find it ironic, the fact that America is one of the most body-image-concious, yet we have I think the highest rate of obesity. And yes, now many people are becoming aware of this issue, and there are many solutions that have been implemented to resolve this, even the president's wife; Michelle Obama has created plans to help out solve this, but the issue is that these are all futuristically speaking, children NOW are overweight, young adults NOW have medical problems associated with these greater weights. All these plans are too much in the future, we still have about eight years until 2020, and maybe the major things takes time, but we can do things on small scale now. We could educate people more about being aware and teach people the consequences of their actions with accordance to their weight. I find it really awesome, though that the government itself is becoming aware and taking action. I'm proud.
Alot of people just sit at home watching television or playing video games when they can be active. With all the technology these days people just get lazyier and lazyier each day they sit on the couch and eat junk food. They can at least get an hour of exercise a day.
I can't believe that we haven't gotten healthier and have gotten worse than we were before! I think people need to realize that your health is not something that you just brush off of your shoulders and say, "Oh well, no big deal!"
I think smoking is bad for the health of younger people and older people and I'm glad they have laws about no smoking in public buildings. People that smoke don't realize they could have something wrong with their lungs and they might not even know that they do have something wrong with their lungs. They could have tooth decay and might not even want to do anything about it.
I think smoking has got a lot worse over the past decade and the government needs to do something about it soon not ten years from now in 2020. I also think obesity is becoming a big problem and i think the reason for that is all the new technology a lot of people are sitting on the couch texting instead of exercising
i think we are all getting lazier and fat cuase of all the tecnology that takes up all our time were are all addicted to to many things we need change
I think the government has to do the right thing. 2020 is 10 years away- obesity could get worse. At least the is doing something about it.
Well i think that the "Healthy People" program is a great idea! Its true you see more overweight and obese people rather than in shape, people nowadays are just lazy and sit around and do nothing and instead of walking they just drive to where ever they want to go i think that that's one of the reasons why some people in America are fat rather then in other countries where they walk to get to place to place.
Too many people eat fast food we need to stop it and start eating healthier. I eat fast food, but not all the time so things need to change.
