Census targets tech-savvy Hispanic youth

Census targets tech-savvy Hispanic youth Groups pushing for robust Hispanic participation in the 2010 census announced a new campaign Thursday that aims to reach the hard-to-count group through its smart-phone-toting youngsters.

The "Be Counted, Represent" campaign offers music downloads and a chance at concert tickets to cell phone users who share their e-mail addresses and phone numbers with organizers and forward information about the census to their friends.

They hope those messages promoting participation in the count will zip throughout the social networks of youngsters who can persuade their parents to fill out and return their census forms.

The campaign offers a package of 25 music downloads curated for a young Hispanic audience to cell phone users who share their zip codes, e-mail addresses and cell phone numbers with the program's organizers. The downloads include songs by such artists as Pitbull, Mos Def and Morrissey.

Organizers said such measures are a way to get through to an ethnic group that has been hard for census officials to reach because of indifference, language barriers and — for some — deportation fears.

I think that this a bad idea because this is racial profiling. They shouldn't only target Hispanics like the article says. Also not all Hispanics do not do the census. That is my opinion...

It seems like a great idea to me, because most teens love music and cell phones. So, merging the two could get more ethnic groups to step and fill out their census forms without the fear of being deported.

I think this article is to tell people that if they get this message they would respond yo it and know that it not some how a trick. The article stated that they offer a package of 25 music downloads, and i thik it is a good idea because kids and teens like music.

I think that this is racist and somewhat a bribe. Nobody else gets prizes for doing the census. They say that the reason Hispanics don't do the census because they undocumented Americans. But don't you think that there are other types of undocumented people that live in America but are not hispanic

I would say that this is a bit racist as well as disrespectful. The census can't get to the parents so they have to get the children to do it for them. Many Latin Americans are so scared of being deported they don't even trust any one outside of there family; Maybe that could be another reason why Latin Americans don't do the census. But none should be discriminated just because of there color of skin or what they wear. It been almost 500 years and we still discriminate; Its the 21st century it's time for change!

I don't think that this is a bad way because the group is not forcing the Hispanic youth to join or fill the census. Even though some people think this is invading their privacy, it's not, because the information is giving them and their community some benefits and nobody is going to share that information. But sending it to kids and teens might not be very useful if the parents are still against it. Other than language barriers and deportation fears, which are mentioned in the last sentence, I cannot see why parents don't waste a few minutes to help out the community.

I do not like this idea i think it is unintelligent and it is discriminatory against the American,African American, Asian and all other races. It excludes the ideas of other races from not speaking English or not wanting to be deported because illegal entree into the country. The way that this is handled is very primitive and invasive of there own lives. It is not needed to invade in the lives of young Latin Americans just to get the adults to due the census it is very rude, sneaky, and suspicious. This article is unnecessary and vulgar and i believe that they should stop this unruly process of invasion.

What I thought about this article was that this census should go in through computers or cellphones because then maybe some Latin American kids might actually send all the information that is needed for the census that is in technology. What I think the target audience is in this article is all the Latin American kids because some are the families that don't want to send in their information because they are scared to get deported from the United States like it says in the article. This is like something that I learned in my class because my teacher talked about how some of these things that they say can actually be true and by it maybe being true some of the kids will actually send all the information because they will want the thing they are going to get

A census is when every few years you get a letter in the mail about who lives in our household and some Latin Americans need to fill out this survey. A campaign has been held that gives out free music and to sign up for this then your giving out your information. Your giving out your email or phone number. If kids are involved in this then they will show other kids about this campaign so they will have more information. I remember my mom getting letters in the mail asking information and i did not really understand what that was until i found out what a census was. This informs and purswayes people about people doing the census. I think it is fair for everyone to complete a census because the government should know the population
