Car show benefits Amy Center

Polished vehicles and hours that were spent to restore them gleamed in the sunlight during the second annual car, truck and motorcycle show hosted by Midwest Sho Boyz and Kroger this weekend. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Amy Schulz Child Advocacy Center, which received notification less than two weeks ago from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services that it will not fund child advocacy centers effective July 1.

“We’re a well-known club and when people heard we were donating to the Amy Center, a lot of them decided to come out,” show organizer Bob Ellis with Midwest Sho Boyz said. “It feels great and we wouldn’t have thought of anyone else to give to.”

This year, an increase in advertising for the event that included more than 3,000 fliers helped draw in local residents along with entries from Marion, St. Louis and Kentucky, according to Ellis. Donations from sponsors and assistance from club members made the event possible, and Ellis noted, “They’re doing a lot of work — plus in the heat.”

Denny Heck and his father-in-law Gene O’Dell proudly displayed a 1951 Chevy truck that O’Dell acquired from his sister 15 years ago. This is the second time they have showcased the truck to see if it had the possibility of winning an award. On Saturday, three trophies were to be awarded for each of the 34 classes of entries as well as 11 specialty awards.

“It’s stayed original other than the engine and interior,” Heck said. “I’m surprised something that old can stay in that good of shape.”

Along with serving as a hobby, the truck also provides entertainment for the family’s grandchildren who ride in it as much as possible. Both men said they enjoyed participating in the show especially since funds will benefit the Amy Center.

“A lot of people need help, and then there’s certain benefits like this where it helps a lot of people at the same time,” Heck said. “It feels good knowing you’re not just out here to show your truck.”

It is great to have people to sell stuff for the army. They do need all the support that they can get. Like these people doing the right thing to do.

Its good to see that people have a car show for a good reason. i know what a 51' chevy is and what it looks like because my friend went to that car show and saw that car! he took pictures and showed it to me. I would love to own one of those.

I think it's great that there's a car show that benefits for a good cause. I'll bet that 51' chevy looks and drives nice. I'd sure like to drive it.
