Bowl for Literacy Saturday

VALDOSTA — The Literacy Volunteer Program (LVP) of South Georgia is asking for community support in Bowl for Literacy at Jac’s Bowling Lanes Saturday, Sept. 18. Early sign ups begin at noon and games start at 1 p.m. “The reason why we have the fund-raiser is not only to raise funds for the LVP to do what we do, but we like for people to come out and show their support to help stamp out illiteracy in our community,” Debbie Altobello, LVP fundraising coordinator, said. Participants can donate money, prizes or bowl to help the LVP. Those wanting to bowl must get a team of five or more members together. Sponsor sheets are available through Saturday and participants can play by a set dollar amount per game or get sponsorship per pin. Donations to participate cost $20 per person, including shoe and ball rentals. Winners will receive plaques, in categories such as highest and lowest scores. Money raised will benefit the Lowndes County community, providing supplies, such as books, membership fees with ProLiteracy and volunteers. Overall, the donations will help to improve literacy in the community. Door prizes will be awarded and prizes can be won throughout the event. A silent auction will also take place, including earrings from J. Carbone, four one-day passes to Wild Adventures Water & Theme Park, one-night stays in area motels, dinners for two, and more. “It’s (the event) a lot of fun,” Altobello said. Altobello has worked with LVP for three years and is looking forward to Saturday’s benefit bowl. “(I enjoy) everyone coming out and having fun and enjoying themselves and that the Literacy Volunteer Program gets to benefit from all the companionship, everybody coming out and just supporting the Literacy Volunteer Program and hopefully we’ll also get more tutors and more volunteers,” she said. On average, 30 to 40 people attend the biannual event. Everyone is welcome and are encouraged to come by to spend family time together. Jac’s Bowling Lanes is located at 406 Connell Road. It is a good thing we have people in GA helping with the literacy charity. I've heard that it goes to a great cause. The charity will help America end illiteracy. The small things we do can help us be a better America!
